Fulbright-mtvU Fellowships

Fulbright-mtvU Fellowships, administered by the Institute of International Education, are for U.S. students to conduct research abroad for one academic year on study projects of their own design around an aspect of international musical culture.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE STUDENTS THAT APPLIED FOR A 2008-2009 FULBRIGHT mtvU SCHOLARSHIP. THE APPLICATION PROCESS IS NOW CLOSED.

Up to 4 Fellowships will be awarded to outstanding U.S. students nationwide. In addition to proposing unique projects on "the power of music" as a global force for mutual understanding, applicants must submit an outreach plan describing how they intend to share their activities with their peers during their Fulbright year.

James Collins James Collins

School: Harvard University

Major: Visual and Environmental Studies

Country Visiting: South Africa

James Collins graduated from Harvard University in June 2007 with a B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies. As an undergraduate he was a writer for the Harvard Crimson, and his photography and films have been shown at the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts and the Harvard Arts First. Mr. Collins, a percussionist, served as President of the Harvard-Radcliffe Orchestra, and has performed with numerous campus ensembles. With his Fulbright-mtvU Award, he will travel to South Africa to create a documentary film exploring the impact and influence of marching band music on underprivileged South African youth.

School: Temple University

Major: Film and Media Arts

Phally Chroy is pursuing a Masters of Fine Arts at Temple University in Film and Media Arts. His films include I am Dancer in My Heart, Family, and How I see the World. Several of his works have been screened at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. With his Fulbright-mtvU Award, Mr. Chroy will study the rediscovery of the Golden Era of Cambodian music. He will make a documentary exploring how the post-Khmer generation has used this music to reconstruct their identity and rediscover their cultural roots.

School: New York University

Major: Politics of Language and Identity in the Caribbean

Larnies Bowen graduated New York University in June 2007 with a B.A. in Politics of Language and Identity in the Caribbean. Her past experience includes interning at TRACE Magazine, researching and writing on current trends and events. She plans to use her Fulbright-mtvU Award to study Panamanian Reggae music as a vehicle for understanding West Indian-Panamanian identity, culture, and collective experience. Ms. Bowen will use her findings to create an audio-visual history of Spanish Reggae on CD, to be used in Panamanian and American schools.

Aaron Shneyer Aaron Shneyer

School: Georgetown University

Major: Anthropology

Aaron Shneyer completed his studies at Georgetown University with a B.A. in Anthropology. He has been active in conflict resolution since his teenage years. As one of the creators of Students for Middle East Peace, he brought together over one hundred Jewish, Arab, and other students for bi-weekly dialogues. He plays guitar and bass, and performed in an ensemble that brought together Jewish and Arab musicians. With his Fulbright-mtvU Award, Mr. Shneyer will travel to Jerusalem to develop a year long music program that brings together Israeli and Palestinian high school students to write and play music together, culminating in performances in their own communities. He will create a website in collaboration with his students, documenting their experiences with videos, photos, and sound recordings along with written commentary.
