The girls from Official Hot Mess discuss their love of Quantum Physics, Aeronautical Engineering and Viacom's highly effective building security on this weeks Hot Seat.

The girls from Official Hot Mess discuss their love of Quantum Physics, Aeronautical Engineering and Viacom’s highly effective building security on this weeks Hot Seat.

1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Well…considering we call ourselves “Official Hot Mess”, where do we begin? I guess one of the craziest things that has happened would have to be the time we were doing a show in NYC and we were asked to do an interview for VH1. After getting on the wrong train and ending up in Newark rather than Manhattan….needless to say, we were running a little late for our interview When we FINALLY made our way back to NYC, we found that it probably would’ve been easier to get into the White House than to get through security at the building. So after they took our finger prints, photographs (and most likely ran background checks) we were finally on our way!…or so we thought. Apparently we didn’t scan our visitor passes properly when we rent through the turn-style, and set off what sounded like every alarm in the entire building. Before we knew it, we were surrounded by a swarm of security guards and cops!

2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Lindsey: Quantum Physics…just to say I did, I love a challenge
Kristy: Aeronautical Engineering, I’ve always been fascinated by aerospace…plus, I’d love to skip those lines at the airport and fly my own plane!

3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Sarasota, because its home! But, aside from that, the Big Apple, because according to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys “there’s nothing you can’t do…big lights will inspire you”!

4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
“To laugh often and much; To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children; To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends; To appreciate beauty, to find the best in others; To leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch or a redeemed social condition; To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded.”
-Bessie Stanley, 1905

5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Lindsey: Weezer’s new album Hurley, the Blink-182 classics, Maroon 5, Neon Trees…and gotta admit, got a minor case of Beiber Fever hahah!
Kristy: 30 Seconds to Mars album This is War, the new Linkin Park record A Thousand Suns, Rise Against and The Friday Night Boys

6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to?
JERSEY SHORE! (**fist pump**) …we became instant fans when we heard our music on the show. Snooki was drunkenly fist pumping to our song while dancing on a table and proceeded to faceplant off of the table! Some other shows we love are Family Guy, South Park, CSI Miami and America’s Funniest Videos As far as books go, big fans of The Da Vinci Code, Harry Potter and The Great Gatsby.

7. What’s the first concert you ever saw – how was it?
When we were in kindergarten, we went to public school with Gene Simmons’ kids…so our whole class went on a field trip to a KISS dress rehearsal! It was way too loud for us, so we both wore earmuffs! However…a few years later, we thought we were super cool “music pros” so our parents took us to an NSYNC concert, we loved it and even got the NSYNC puppet dolls for Christmas that year…and still have them hahah!

8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Lindsey: My super comfy pajammies, my cockatoo Sage, and my blackberry.
Kristy: My snuggie, my laptop and blueberries.

9. Who are your major musical influences?
Most of our songs are pop with an underlying rock feel which comes from being influenced by artists like Blondie, Heart, Cyndi Lauper, The Bangles, Pat Benatar, and The GoGo’s. We’re influenced by rock, alternative, hip hop, etc and bring aspects of each genre into our personal style.

Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Live well, love much, laugh often

Oh I do love to be right. The comments section was abuzz with support for The Friday Night Boys, who were subsequently voted into the top spot winning this Freshmen round. Their video will be added into on-air rotation started next week. There was also a good deal of support for Scriptz N’ Screwz so everyone must really dig their animation as well. Check back on Monday for a new round of artists. Don’t forget to stop by and tell me who you’re voting for and why you’ve made them your top pick. In the meantime, follow me and mtvU on Twitter for musical updates.
Skyzoo, Scripts, We Were Promised Jetpacks, Locksmith and The Friday Night Boys are all vying for your vote that will get them into video rotation.

They’ve performed on TRL and were named one of the Pop Punk Rookies of 2009. The Friday Night Boys released their first album That’s What She Said at the beginning of the summer and have been gaining momentum ever since. Originally one half of the hip-hop duo The Frontline, rapper Locksmith has worked his way into a strong solo career. Scripts N Screwz, the producer/writer duo from Saint Louis, have brought new single “Brick,” off debut album The New Noise, to this round of the Freshmen. At 26, Skyzoo has already launched campaigns for ESPN and Guiness. His first studio album The Salvation will be released this September. We Were Promised Jetpacks come to us from across the pond in Glasgow, Scotland with debut LP These Four Walls.

The Friday Night Boys

“Stuttering”

Something tells me that this group will have a very loud boisterous group in the comments section this week. (Please prove me right. Love it when that happens.) The video is a little bit cutesy for me, but it is nice to see the boys being anxious. Yes, this opinion is completely biased due to my gender but I can’t really help that now can I? It’s endearing that the lead singer is kind of the bully. I’m glad the slightly nerdy one finally gets a hug at the end.

Locksmith

“Rare Form”

It is hard for me to evaluate this video as the genre is not one I would normally listen to. I’m not sure I can fully appreciate it as it’s meant to be presented. It is a little too intense for my taste. However, I will comment on the energy that Locksmith brings to his words and how it makes for a powerful delivery. He is nothing if not passionate. (And the commentary about Kanye was pretty amusing.)

Scripts N’ Screwz

“Brick”

Something is up lately with creepy animated videos of the nautical variety. (Granted, Modest Mouse didn’t really take advantage of robust mermaids. I‘m glad those gals can also play instruments.) Overall, I really like this. The constant water-based, oceanic quips in the lyrics highlight the cleverness of the video and I enjoy the dark heavy beat. The Auto-Tune is used with a light enough touch. Who cares if Asher Roth already used this particular format?

Skyzoo

“The Beautiful Decay”

I enjoy this video not only for its very iconic shots of New York City, but also because Skyzoo is truly attempting to represent where he’s come from and where his background and roots are firmly situated. It does stray into the typical territory of hip hop artists, young kid on the streets dreaming of a career. But when it’s presented alongside the video, you get a sense of how much heart this kid has and how the awareness of the dichotomies that run through his life contribute to the lyrics. He doesn’t want to make any fuss or pretend he’s something that he is not. Very admirable.

We Were Promised Jetpacks

“Roll Up Your Sleeves”

The intro to this track is just a bit too long for me. But once it actually gets going, I liked it a lot more than anticipated. I don’t know about you, but accents really get me and the fact that you can hear Adam Thompson’s brogue when he sings is quite charming. I’m not overly impressed with the accompanying visuals. I’ve seen this cut and paste style used in so many indie videos lately and I think it’s time to set it down. Maybe if the separate shapes had come together to form a cohesive image I would feel differently? I feel as though that would have made the effect a bit smarter. But the song itself is a beautiful sentiment about waiting for love and presents a nice build-up overall.

Well kids. There is nothing that I am over-the-top overly enthusiastic about this week. So how about you sway my opinion in the comments section below. Tell me why you like the artist and help me make up my mind. Happy voting.

Voting runs from 11 AM (EST) Monday until 2 PM (EST) on Friday.
