There has never been a more important opportunity for us to help ensure lasting peace in Sudan. Find out how you can see what’s happening in Sudan now and help prevent a civil war.

There has never been a more important opportunity for us to help ensure lasting peace in Sudan, a country that has faced years of war, genocide and unimaginable atrocities. Starting January 9th, and lasting for six days, South Sudan will vote on a referendum for independence from the North, which has the potential to push Sudan back into a state of civil war. YOU can prevent this war from ever starting by showing the world you are watching.

Here’s how:

1) WATCH: Become a peace monitor by visiting the Satellite Sentinel Project where near real-time satellite imagery and analysis, combined with video dispatches and crowd-sourced reports from local voices on the ground, will allow you to monitor potential threats of mass violence to civilians. While you’re there, you can check out other ways to stand with the people of Sudan.

2) FOLLOW: Start following @SudanSentinel on Twitter for breaking updates and alerts on Sudan so you can be the first to tell your friends what’s happening and how to take action.

3) JOIN: Sign STAND’s Pledge to Protect and join students nationwide in solidarity around the fight for lasting peace in Darfur and southern Sudan. Make your pledge to protect to show President Obama and his administration you stand in solidarity for peace.

Darfur is not the only place in Africa that has experienced genocide. In 1994 the world turned its back on the victims of Rwanda’s genocide. In 100 days, a million people were slaughtered. Now you have the chance to light a candle of hope for Rwanda’s forgotten survivors and make a real difference in their lives. You can also help stop a genocide happening right now in Darfur. Don’t let history repeat itself.

Divestment occurs when people sell off their investments in firms, industries, or countries to protest the social or political choices of those institutions. Divestment shows leaders that you’re morally or philosophically opposed to their policies and are willing to detach yourself from potential profit made from something you disagree with. For students, who do not necessarily invest directly themselves, the divestment movement is more about encouraging politicians and university heads to make political and social reforms in their investments.

Divestment in Sudan

In addition to mobilizing student communities to advocate for peace and human rights in Sudan, the Sudan advocacy community launched a successful advocacy campaign to leverage economic pressure on perpetrators of genocide in Darfur. The Sudan Divestment Task Force facilitated targeted divestment from 27 states, 20 cities, and 61 universities, including the University of California university system, Stanford University, and Duke University. In 2009, the Sudan Divestment Task Force was formally incorporated into the Conflict Risk Network, which provides investors with research and engagement services to countries where genocide and/or mass atrocities are occurring. As a membership-based organization, the Conflict Risk Network assists individual and institutional investors in adjusting investment practices in Sudan, as well as other areas of concern.
