Collegefest in is an event for college students to show up drunk at noon, listen to live music and get free stuff. What better place to interview college students about the upcoming election? Going into the event, I knew that not everyone was going to know a vast amount about politics. I expected some college students to be more educated on the current election than others. Some, I expected, to be avid supporters of a certain candidate, and others may not know who they are voting for yet. And there were students who knew what they were talking about. Most knew more than me.
But what I didn’t expect was that a college student would not even know who was running for President of the United States. This particular college student thought that Barack Obama was running against John Kerry in the 2012 Presidential race. The race that has been the main topic of media outlets for months. The race that is all over television, newspapers, the internet, and mouths. When I met the mustachioed gentleman who was living back in 2004 or 2008 (he wasn’t actually right about any particular Presidential election even), I gave him the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he had made a mistake. Maybe he misspoke and it would only take him a few seconds to realize his blunder. I even repeated what he said over and over so that he would catch it and restate his answer. But, alas, we spoke for a good eight minutes and he did not realize on his own that when he would enter the voting booth that there would not be a choice for the man he wanted to vote for. For his sake and John Kerry’s, I hope their is a “write- in” section.
