We are excited to announce the mtvU 2012 Man and Woman of the Year, R&B singer/songwriter Frank Ocean and Pakistani social activist Malala Yousafzai: two millennials, who showed unbelievable strength so that their voices could be heard.
This year Frank Ocean went from the musical genius behind the scenes to a Grammy nominated artist. Not only has his debut album “Channel Orange” won over critics and fans alike, but his brave admission of loving another man has broken boundaries within the hip-hop and R&B community, gaining Ocean overwhelming support for his honesty. On the other side of the world Malala Yousafzai, at 15 years old, has put her life on the line as a blogger for the BBC. She detailed her daily struggle for access to education under the Taliban who, this past fall, shot her in the head for her commitment to personal expression. Though two continents apart, both Ocean and Yousafzai have demonstrated their bravery, risking their careers and lives respectively, to have their stories known.
