Over the course of the next few months some of the most anticipated games in years will drop, and you don’t want to have to worry about sitting through that lab on the day your new favorite games comes out, now do you? LittleBigPlanet 2
Release Date: January 18 Platform: Playstation 3
“LitleBigPlanet 2″ features Sackboy (or Sackgirl) soldiering on in the most adorable manner possible. While the original “LittleBigPlanet” may have been a fairly straightforward side-scrolling platformer, in “LBP2″ Sackboy’s packing new tools (like a grappling hook), Move support, thousands of collectables, and a wild community creating an almost infinite amount of levels. There’s so much going on in this game that you may want to make sure your calendar is clear for a whole month to fully enjoy it.
 

Dead Space 2
Release Date: January 25 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The follow up to one of the scariest games in recent memory, “Dead Space 2″ continues to follow the adventures of troubled space traveler Isaac Clarke as he attempts to stay alive while aboard The Sprawl. The game might not help you too much in your astronomy class, but it should offer some interesting views of Saturn as the space station orbits it, and Isaac fights to stay alive.
 
 
 

Mario Sports Mix
Release Date: February 7 Platform: Wii
There’s been “Mario Soccer,” “Mario Baseball,” “Mario Basketball,” “Mario Golf,” and “Mario Tennis,” but if you thought that Mario and his friends had played just about every sport possible, you’d be wrong. In “Mario Sports Mix” you’ll be able to prove the plumber and his buddies can throw down at volleyball, field hockey, ice hockey, dodgeball, and street basketball. This compilation should prove once and for all that they’ve all got game, even if it’s on the field hockey field. As an added bonus, since it’s a Wii game, maybe you could use it for your gym credit.
 

Test Drive Unlimited 2
Release Date: February 8 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Spring Break is coming up, but if you’d like to head to Ibiza and Hawaii as early as February 8th, then pick up “Test Drive Unlimited 2″ and immerse yourself in an amazing M.O.O.R.G. (Massively Open Online Racing Game). It’s got gorgeous cars in a beautiful setting, how can you go wrong? A perfect break from the stress of your classes; just sit back, relax, and burn some rubber in the sun.
 
 
 

Killzone 3
Release Date: February 12 Platform: Playstation 3
Picking up right after the ending of “Killzone 2,” this sequel is so intense, two dimensions can’t contain it. That’s right, “Killzone 3″ takes advantage of all of Sony’s latest technologies, including 3D and Move support. Add to that one of the most robust online experience available on the console, and you’ve got one of the best games to get your entire dorm fragging at the same time this semester.
 
 
 

Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
Release Date: February 15 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360
“Marvel vs. Capcom 3” is an epic fighting game ten years in the making. If you missed out on the previous two iterations of the series (possibly because you were 8), these titles allows you to take the best and brightest characters from Marvel and Capcom and pit them against each other in wonderful 2D fighting arenas. Trust us, the “Fate of Two Worlds” is in your hands, which is way more important than that PowerPoint project you’re going to need to do in the middle of February.
 
 

Bulletstorm
Release Date: February 22 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Simply put, “Bulletstorm” is arcade-style shooting in a “Gears of War”-style packaging. Epic Games (the minds behind the “Gears of War”) have put together a wildly violent shooter that rewards you for creative kills on your quest for the biggest multiplier, and the highest score. You could try to take this game to the mathematics department and see if you could use it as an independent study (emphasis on the try).
 
 
 

de Blob 2
Release Date: February 22 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS
Everyone’s favorite ball of paint is back to take down Comrade Black again in “de Blob 2.” The once vibrant Prisma City has fallen to the INKT Corporation who have drained the city of color, and only de Blob can eradicate the city of dullness. If you had to choose playing this or going to your art history class, it seems like there’s an obvious winner.
 
 
 

Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: March (T.B.D.) Platform: 3DS
So, we’re cheating a little with this one, since it’s not just a game; it’s the launch of a new portable platform… IN 3D!!! WITHOUT GLASSES!!! While there is still very little information about the 3DS’ launch (like when, where, what games… you know, the good stuff) there’s a very good chance it’s going to come out this semester; quite possibly while you’re cramming for midterms. Start planning now, and make sure your priorities are are in the right order.
 
 

Portal 2
Release Date: April 19 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The original “Portal” was a mind-bending cacophony of 3D puzzles, humor, and unforgettable ending song that had both gamers and critics in love with it in 2007. Three and a half years later, the game that started as a “Half-Life” mod is getting a proper sequel in “Portal” which has more puzzles, more robotic friends, and hopefully more cake. If that’s not a reason to make sure your schedule is clear later this semester, I don’t know what is.

Dance Central

It’s finally official; each major console now has a peripheral for motion-based games, and along with it, a growing library of new and inventive games that take advantage of gamers willing to get up off their couch and move around. You now have no reason to wait until the weekend to get your swerve on; you can totally get down in your dorm room with “Dance Central” any night of the week. The better you recreate the hottest dance moves from some of the best artists to ever shake their booty on camera the more points you’ll score. It’s kind of like “Dancing With The Stars” only there’s no stars, or judging, or TV cameras … basically it’s just you putting on a little show for your Microsoft Kincect.
 
 

EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp
Release Date: 11/16/10 Platform: Wii
If you think you’re going to need to get back into shape after the Thanksgiving break, and you love football, pick up “EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp” for the Wii, and relive those glory two-a-days. “NFL Training Camp” comes packed with the a heart rate monitor and wireless motion tracking device to monitor your every move through the game’s 70 drills and eight challenges. It’s a workout, just without all those pesky pads.
 
 
 

Donkey Kong Country Returns

“Donkey Kong Country Returns” is just like you remember it from back in the SNES days, only now you’ve got to get your arms swinging for DK to do his ground pound or for Diddy to fire his peanut gun. So it’s minimal motion, but the game’s still great, and absolutely deserves to be on this list no matter what you say.
 
 
 
 

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011

Most college campuses frown on bringing weapons on to campus, but you’ll need the gun-like Top Shot Elite controller to take advantage of all the action that “Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011″ has to offer. Play as Cole Rainsford as you venture through the cold woods of Africa and take down some of the spookiest creatures you’ll never hope to run into in real life.
 
 
 

Kinect Adventures

If you’re considering dropping $150 on some fancy new Kinect hardware from Microsoft, then the first game worth playing (mostly because it comes packed in with the device) is “Kinect Adventures.” Use your body as the controller to hit the rapids, keep your avatar from drowning, or play some 3D style “Breakout,” and those are just a few of the games included. Get some exercise and have an awesome adventure while you’re at it.

While it seems like sports mini-game compilations are all the rage with these new motion-based platforms, “Deca Sports Freedom” knows how to put together 10 solid titles for you to take advantage of your newly found freedom from controllers. “Kung Fu Rider” may be the most realistic game ever created – as long as in your reality you’re a Japanese office worker running from the Yakuza whose only weapon is his office chair. If you’re tired of aimlessly swinging your Wii Remote with out any real purpose, then Nintendo’s “FlingSmash” is here to finally give some meaning to your existence. Can’t (or just don’t want to) make it to the gym? Well, let “Sports Champions” help you out then. With six realistic recreations of “sports” from volleyball to archery for you to play in the comfort of your dorm room, is there really any reason to go outside?

Halo: Reach

You finally unpacked your dorm room, you could: A) go see your friends that you haven’t seen all summer, B) go try and find that girl (or guy) that you never quite sealed the deal with last semester or C) stay in your room and finish that game you were working on before you packed everything up to go back to school. If you picked “C” there’s a very good possibility that you won’t be doing much socializing this fall, and instead, you’ll be putting in some time with this season’s hottest games. If you’ve been playing “Metroid” games for as long as you can remember, then you know “Other M” is not to be missed. It’s a whole new take on Samus’ back story, brought to you by Team Ninja, the folks that have spent the last few years working on “D.O.A.” and “Ninja Gaiden.” Don’t worry, the game is pretty short, so you should be able to squeeze it in somewhere between classes and your next trip to the cafe.
 
 
 

Dead Rising 2

Every college kid wishes they could head to Vegas for the weekend, and “Dead Rising 2″ can take you there, but it might just make you regret wishing you could go. The strip has become infested with zombies and it’s up to Chuck Greene to escape alive. Fight hordes of zombies with anything and everything you can find in the environment; duct tape will become your best friend as you strap a chainsaw to an oar and mow down some undead. Spend some time crafting weapons in the game and prove the theory that college kids can turn just about any inanimate object into something useful.

Wii Party
Release Date: 10/3/10 Platform: Wii
Nintendo’s back with a fun game for you and all your friends; “Wii Party” might come off as another title in the “Mario Party” series, but it’s far from it. Squeeze a few of your friends into your dorm room, and play a couple rounds of “hide the remote” or one of the other 80 minigames that are included in the collection. There’s nothing more satisfying than proving you’re better than your friends at something that really doesn’t matter, plus, no one says you can’t layer your own meta games on top of who wins each round.
 

Halo: Reach
Release Date: 9/14/10 Platform: Xbox 360
“Halo” is about to come to an end with its final chapter, “Halo: Reach,” which is actually its first chapter. Learn about the origins of the war against the Covenant, and what went down as one of the humans last colonies, Reach, comes under attack. Even though the game is set in 2552, think of it as your own version of history class.
 
 
 
 

Professor Layton and the Unwound Future

Is your brain still in a funk from summer break? If you’re having trouble getting your intellectual juices flowing “Professor Layton and the Future” is sure to help you get right back into the swing of things. Much like the other “Layton” games, “Unwound Future” is sure to be packed to the brim with brain bending puzzles that all come together to tell a great story in the end. It’s kind of like your statistics class, just, you know, fun.
 
 

Rock Band 3
Release Date: 10/26/10 Platform: Wii, Xbox 360, Playstation, DS
If you think you don’t need another rhythm game in your room, think again, because “Rock Band 3″ comes packing a new instrument, the keyboard. Rock out with a whole new soundtrack of over 80 songs, some of them being classics, tailor made for you to finally put those piano lessons to use. As an added bonus, if you want to pony up a few extra bucks, you can take “Rock Band” into pro mode and finally learn to play a real guitar using instruments with actual strings.
 
 

NBA Jam

While you may be too young to remember, many an epic battle was waged during the 1990s over games of “NBA Jam”; Pippin versus Miller, Kemp against Ewing, Bill and Hilary Clinton against the Beastie Boys. Like I said, epic. This year’s “NBA Jam” is looking to take that standard and kick it up a notch. Go head-to-head against your roommates and see who’s got the best ball skills on the hallowed courts of “Jam.”

On top of that, it’s got a few new tricks up it’s sleeve, like bocce, and really, when was the last time you played a good game of virtual bocce?
 
 

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow

If you’ve been vampire hunting all your life with the Belmonts, then “Castlevania: Lords of Shadow” may be more important to you this semester than that C you need to pass your philosophy class. More of a reboot than a sequel, “Lords of Shadow” has Gabriel Belmont adventuring through a gorgeous 3D castle, looking to put an end to the supernatural creatures that murdered his wife.

Super Street Fighter IV

The last couple weeks of classes are always the most stressful. After eight months with roommates, all those annoying little things they do are about to hit a boiling point, and nobody needs that added aggravation when trying to write term papers and cram for exams. Dementium II

Have your roommate help put an end to the planet’s civil war while shooting giant worms in the face. Just try thinking of a better way to spend a reading day.

Just remember that you’re not really in the ocean, because wearing that scuba suit on your couch is going to get hot.

It’s a little creepy, but it also sounds like the perfect game.

Go golfing, gambling, play darts or rejoin the ranks of the Yakuza and take down the bastards that are trying to shut down your orphanage. Ya know, it’s your choice.

“Tropico 3″ not only lets you go to the islands, it lets you control one. It’s birthed by the same minds that brought the world “Viewtiful Joe,” “Okami,” and “Devil May Cry” and is being developed by Platinum Games, the same studio that brought you 2009′s “MadWorld,” so, there’s a good chance that “Bayonetta” is going to rock.

Take everything you know about “Spinter Cell” and throw it out the window. In his 2010 adventure Sam Fischer has gone rogue and is looking for information about the death of his daughter. Dante’s Inferno

While it may be a bit different than the book you had to read for your theology class, “Dante’s Inferno” loosely follows the same story of Dante as he works his way through the circles of Hell. The U.S. missed out on the original N64 release of “Sin & Punishment,” but Nintendo is making up for that oversight, ten years later, with the release of the sequel. Spec Ops Mode changes all that. Try to tackle all of these uniquely tailored challenges that pull from the game’s main storyline with a friend in order to master each, and be awarded all three stars. A great addition to an amazing game.
 

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Why you need to play it: It’s multiplayer Mario.
It’s been almost fifteen years since Nintendo released a 2D Mario game on a console, but that isn’t the reason that you need to play this game. It’s because you, and three of your friends, get to play a 2D Mario game on a console, together. The game’s co-op completely changes how you, and your friends, play “Super Mario Bros.” Suddenly, even the little things like grabbing coins and jumping across pits has a whole new level of challenge added to it, as you try and avoid bumping into anyone as you do it.
 

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Why you need to play it: It’s gorgeous and surprisingly deep for a Wii game.
A lot of people say that Wii games are all boring party games that look like they should have come out on the Dreamcast. Well, “Marumasa: The Demon Blade” proves both of those points wrong. Not only is the game a virtual work of art, but the hack-n-slash gameplay, and impressively deep RPG elements prove that there is not only room for pretty games on the Wii, but also ones that make you think.
 
 

Borderlands

Why you need to play it: It combines FPS and RPG games in a new way, and then makes the game co-op
When two behemoth genres like First Person Shooters and Role Playing Games come together it usually causes more problems than it solves. However, “Borderlands” managed to find the sweet spot right in between grinding and fragging, and then made it so that you could play the entire game, from start to finish, with three of your friends. When you add in the fact that the game includes over three million different gun combinations, you’ve really got a solid package of a game here.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC Release Date: 8/25/09
Why you need to play it: It could be the best Batman game ever made.
It’s almost impressive how badly licensed properties usually translate to video games, but, in the past 30 years of video games, one game has emerged as proof that if people care enough, and the developers are given proper time to work on a game, that you can in fact make a good game that’s based on something else. That game is “Batman Arkham Asylum.” And, it’s not just good because it’s a Batman game … it’s just good.
 

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure

Platform: DS Release Date: 3/17/09
Why you need to play it: It’s Mario meets “Tetris”
Never has looking for a fancy outfit been so fun. You play as the great adventurer Henry Hatsworth as he goes in search of mystical articles of clothing that give him amazing powers. Along the way he happens to reopen a rift to an alternate, puzzle-based dimension where strange beings are invading from. Okay, the story is a little odd, but the gameplay mixes platforming and puzzling AT THE SAME TIME. It’s unlike anything else that came out this year, and should keep you entertained for weeks to come.

DJ Hero

Platforms: PlayStation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii Release Date: 10/27/09
Why you need to play it: It’s a whole new spin on rhythm games
The time has come to put away the plastic drums and microphones, and break out the wheels of steel. “DJ Hero” is unlike any other rhythm game on the market, allowing the player to get behind the turn tables and rack up the points as they mix some of the biggest hip-hop artist for their virtual club crowd. It’s got a whole new feeling to it, and that’s something the genre has been in search of for the last few years.
 
 

Demon’s Souls

Why you need to play it: It’s one of the most challenging, and therefore satisfying, games of the year.
Every now and then a game comes along that reminds you why there are difficulty settings on some games. “Demon’s Souls” is one of those games. Simply put; it’s hard, and you’re going to die… over and over again. It will drive some gamers mad, and make others nostalgic for a time when this level of difficulty wasn’t such a novel experience. At the same time, all that death makes getting anything done in this game bestow a level of accomplishment unlike any other title on this list or, for that matter, any other game that was released this year.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Why you need to play it: It’s one of the most cinematic experiences of the year.
Not playing “Uncharted 2″ would be be like missing the big summer action movie. Not only does it improve on the already impressive “Drake’s Fortune” but it ups the ante in almost every regard; from graphics, to controls, to adding in multiplayer, “Uncharted 2″ is this year’s Dark Knight.

You run, and you jump. That’s all this game is. You don’t know what you’re running from, or why, but you need to get away, right now. And, the absolute best part, is that you can go play it right now, for free, AND you can take it with you on your iPhone. Your world should be complete now.
