It's the eternal struggle for college students: video games vs. class. Check out this list of games that you need to be on the look out for this semester.

Marvel vs Capcom 3

Whether you’ve already locked in your classes for next semester or not, it’s in your best interest to take into consideration just how good some of the upcoming game releases are, and when they’re going to be available. Over the course of the next few months some of the most anticipated games in years will drop, and you don’t want to have to worry about sitting through that lab on the day your new favorite games comes out, now do you? Take our advice, if you schedule your classes around the release dates below, you’ll have one less thing to worry about this semester.

LittleBigPlanet 2
Release Date: January 18 Platform: Playstation 3
“LitleBigPlanet 2″ features Sackboy (or Sackgirl) soldiering on in the most adorable manner possible. While the original “LittleBigPlanet” may have been a fairly straightforward side-scrolling platformer, in “LBP2″ Sackboy’s packing new tools (like a grappling hook), Move support, thousands of collectables, and a wild community creating an almost infinite amount of levels. There’s so much going on in this game that you may want to make sure your calendar is clear for a whole month to fully enjoy it.

Dead Space 2
Release Date: January 25 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The follow up to one of the scariest games in recent memory, “Dead Space 2″ continues to follow the adventures of troubled space traveler Isaac Clarke as he attempts to stay alive while aboard The Sprawl. The game might not help you too much in your astronomy class, but it should offer some interesting views of Saturn as the space station orbits it, and Isaac fights to stay alive.

Mario Sports Mix
Release Date: February 7 Platform: Wii
There’s been “Mario Soccer,” “Mario Baseball,” “Mario Basketball,” “Mario Golf,” and “Mario Tennis,” but if you thought that Mario and his friends had played just about every sport possible, you’d be wrong. In “Mario Sports Mix” you’ll be able to prove the plumber and his buddies can throw down at volleyball, field hockey, ice hockey, dodgeball, and street basketball. This compilation should prove once and for all that they’ve all got game, even if it’s on the field hockey field. As an added bonus, since it’s a Wii game, maybe you could use it for your gym credit.

Test Drive Unlimited 2
Release Date: February 8 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Spring Break is coming up, but if you’d like to head to Ibiza and Hawaii as early as February 8th, then pick up “Test Drive Unlimited 2″ and immerse yourself in an amazing M.O.O.R.G. (Massively Open Online Racing Game). It’s got gorgeous cars in a beautiful setting, how can you go wrong? A perfect break from the stress of your classes; just sit back, relax, and burn some rubber in the sun.

Killzone 3
Release Date: February 12 Platform: Playstation 3
Picking up right after the ending of “Killzone 2,” this sequel is so intense, two dimensions can’t contain it. That’s right, “Killzone 3″ takes advantage of all of Sony’s latest technologies, including 3D and Move support. Add to that one of the most robust online experience available on the console, and you’ve got one of the best games to get your entire dorm fragging at the same time this semester.

Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds
<img class="alignleft" src="http://www.mtvu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/mvc140.jpg" alt=Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds" />Release Date: February 15 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360
“Marvel vs. Capcom 3” is an epic fighting game ten years in the making. If you missed out on the previous two iterations of the series (possibly because you were 8), these titles allows you to take the best and brightest characters from Marvel and Capcom and pit them against each other in wonderful 2D fighting arenas. Trust us, the “Fate of Two Worlds” is in your hands, which is way more important than that PowerPoint project you’re going to need to do in the middle of February.

Bulletstorm
Release Date: February 22 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
Simply put, “Bulletstorm” is arcade-style shooting in a “Gears of War”-style packaging. Epic Games (the minds behind the “Gears of War”) have put together a wildly violent shooter that rewards you for creative kills on your quest for the biggest multiplier, and the highest score. You could try to take this game to the mathematics department and see if you could use it as an independent study (emphasis on the try).

de Blob 2
Release Date: February 22 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii, DS
Everyone’s favorite ball of paint is back to take down Comrade Black again in “de Blob 2.” The once vibrant Prisma City has fallen to the INKT Corporation who have drained the city of color, and only de Blob can eradicate the city of dullness. If you had to choose playing this or going to your art history class, it seems like there’s an obvious winner.

Nintendo 3DS
Release Date: March (T.B.D.) Platform: 3DS
So, we’re cheating a little with this one, since it’s not just a game; it’s the launch of a new portable platform… IN 3D!!! WITHOUT GLASSES!!! While there is still very little information about the 3DS’ launch (like when, where, what games… you know, the good stuff) there’s a very good chance it’s going to come out this semester; quite possibly while you’re cramming for midterms. Start planning now, and make sure your priorities are are in the right order.

Portal 2
Release Date: April 19 Platform: Playstation 3, Xbox 360, PC
The original “Portal” was a mind-bending cacophony of 3D puzzles, humor, and unforgettable ending song that had both gamers and critics in love with it in 2007. Three and a half years later, the game that started as a “Half-Life” mod is getting a proper sequel in “Portal” which has more puzzles, more robotic friends, and hopefully more cake. If that’s not a reason to make sure your schedule is clear later this semester, I don’t know what is.

It’s finally official; each major console now has a peripheral for motion-based games, and along with it, a growing library of new and inventive games that take advantage of gamers willing to get up off their couch and move around. Here’s a little sampling of some of the best games coming out this holiday season for those gamers willing to take a break from studying to get their move on.

The Fight: Lights Out
Release Date: 11/9/10 Platform: Playstation 3
Use the Playstation 3′s Move controllers as stand-in fists and “The Fight: Lights Out” will help you get moving while working through all that aggression towards your history professor. Partake in gritty street fights as you and your fists pound your opponents face in for real… just not.

Dance Central
Release Date: 11/4/10 Platform: Xbox 360
You now have no reason to wait until the weekend to get your swerve on; you can totally get down in your dorm room with “Dance Central” any night of the week. The better you recreate the hottest dance moves from some of the best artists to ever shake their booty on camera the more points you’ll score. It’s kind of like “Dancing With The Stars” only there’s no stars, or judging, or TV cameras … basically it’s just you putting on a little show for your Microsoft Kincect.

EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp
<img class="alignleft" src="http://www.mtvu.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/nfl140.jpg" alt=EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp" />Release Date: 11/16/10 Platform: Wii
If you think you’re going to need to get back into shape after the Thanksgiving break, and you love football, pick up “EA Sports Active NFL Training Camp” for the Wii, and relive those glory two-a-days. “NFL Training Camp” comes packed with the a heart rate monitor and wireless motion tracking device to monitor your every move through the game’s 70 drills and eight challenges.

Donkey Kong Country Returns
Release Date: 11/21/10 Platform: Wii
“Donkey Kong Country Returns” is just like you remember it from back in the SNES days, only now you’ve got to get your arms swinging for DK to do his ground pound or for Diddy to fire his peanut gun. So it’s minimal motion, but the game’s still great, and absolutely deserves to be on this list no matter what you say.

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011
Most college campuses frown on bringing weapons on to campus, but you’ll need the gun-like Top Shot Elite controller to take advantage of all the action that “Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts 2011″ has to offer. Play as Cole Rainsford as you venture through the cold woods of Africa and take down some of the spookiest creatures you’ll never hope to run into in real life.

Kinect Adventures
Release Date: 11/4/10 Platform: Xbox 360
If you’re considering dropping $150 on some fancy new Kinect hardware from Microsoft, then the first game worth playing (mostly because it comes packed in with the device) is “Kinect Adventures.” Use your body as the controller to hit the rapids, keep your avatar from drowning, or play some 3D style “Breakout,” and those are just a few of the games included. Get some exercise and have an awesome adventure while you’re at it.

Deca Sports Freedom
Release Date: 11/18/10 Platform: Xbox 360
While it seems like sports mini-game compilations are all the rage with these new motion-based platforms, “Deca Sports Freedom” knows how to put together 10 solid titles for you to take advantage of your newly found freedom from controllers. Looking for a game that has both dodge ball and paintball where you’re an actual target? Look no further than “Deca Sports.”

Kung Fu Rider
Release Date: 9/7/10 Platform: Playstation 3
“Kung Fu Rider” may be the most realistic game ever created – as long as in your reality you’re a Japanese office worker running from the Yakuza whose only weapon is his office chair. Use the Move controllers to navigate your way through Japan’s twisted streets while trying to stay alive. Sure, it’s a little wacky, but wacky in a good way.

FlingSmash
Release Date: 11/7/10 Platform: Wii
Packed in with the new Wii Remote Plus controller, you no longer need an extra peripheral to play Motion Plus enabled games, and you can immediately commence both flinging and smashing the game’s main character across the screen with joy.

Sports Champions
Release Date: 9/7/10 Platform: Playstation 3
Can’t (or just don’t want to) make it to the gym? Well, let “Sports Champions” help you out then. With six realistic recreations of “sports” from volleyball to archery for you to play in the comfort of your dorm room, is there really any reason to go outside?

Check out our picks for ten games that might be detrimental to your free time for the next few months.

Halo: Reach

You finally unpacked your dorm room, you could: A) go see your friends that you haven’t seen all summer, B) go try and find that girl (or guy) that you never quite sealed the deal with last semester or C) stay in your room and finish that game you were working on before you packed everything up to go back to school. If you picked “C” there’s a very good possibility that you won’t be doing much socializing this fall, and instead, you’ll be putting in some time with this season’s hottest games. To help you out, here are our picks for games that might be detrimental to your free time for the next few months.

Metroid: Other M
Release Date: 8/31/10 Platform: Wii
If you’ve been playing “Metroid” games for as long as you can remember, then you know “Other M” is not to be missed. It’s a whole new take on Samus’ back story, brought to you by Team Ninja, the folks that have spent the last few years working on “D.O.A.” and “Ninja Gaiden.” Don’t worry, the game is pretty short, so you should be able to squeeze it in somewhere between classes and your next trip to the cafe.

Super Street Fighter IV

The last couple weeks of classes are always the most stressful. After eight months with roommates, all those annoying little things they do are about to hit a boiling point, and nobody needs that added aggravation when trying to write term papers and cram for exams. There’s no better way to keep them out of your hair while you study than by distracting them with a video game, and here are 10 of the best games to do just that:

Shut up your brainy roommate with a copy of “Picross 3D.” The game’s logic puzzle will bend and twist the mind into shapes that don’t actually occur in nature. Hopefully, some of the later levels of the game will really drive home the point that your roommate needs to keep quiet the next time he or she gets a B+ on a paper.

Release Date: May 3, 2010 Platform: DS

School is hard, no one will argue it. But at times, video games are even harder than that stats final you didn’t study for. Sometimes you just want to sit back and play something to relax instead of having to worry about keeping your kill-to-death ratio above 1. We want to help you take it easy, so we’ve put together a list of 10 games that don’t take themselves too seriously and will, hopefully, help you blow off some steam and mix in a couple of laughs along the way.

Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter

Release Date: 1/13/10 Platform: PC, Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Arcade)
Despite its name “Serious Sam HD” isn’t very serious at all. It takes place in ancient Egypt as you try and save humanity by blasting monsters with rocket launchers. It’s a remake of Sam’s original adventure from 2001, and while the gameplay is a little dated, big guns never get old.

Dark Void Zero

Release Date: 1/18/10 Platform: DS (DSiWare)
Part marketing scheme and part retro-revival, “Dark Void Zero” looks and plays like it should have been released 20 years ago. Supposedly spawned from a shelved title from the 8-bit era, the game was resurrected by a supposed Capcom contest winner from the ’80s, the Jimmy Fallon, and competed for release as DSiWare. Supposedly.

Matt Hazard: Blood Bath and Beyond

Release Date: 1/6/10 Platform: PlayStation 3 (PSN), Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Arcade)
Faux video game classic “Matt Hazard” gets a sequel of sorts with the 2-D side-scroller “Blood Bath and Beyond,” in which he goes back in time to attempt to stop Marathon MegaCorp from ruining him. The first Matt Hazard game spoofed numerous, classic 3-D titles, and “Blood Bath” follows suit, taking shots at some 2-D greats.

Muscle March

It’s a game about half-naked bodybuilders chasing after a thief that has stolen their friends’ protein powder. Think about that: You run around as a greased-up, muscle-bound vigilante. This game couldn’t be more buff if it tried.

WarioWare D.I.Y.

Release Date: 3/28/10 Platform: DS and Wii (WiiWare)
You know any game with Wario in the title is going to be a little less serious than his plumber arch-nemesis. “D.I.Y.” lets you make, modify and distribute your own mini-games, just like the ones in the “WarioWare” series. You can officially take this opportunity to perfect the “Picking Your Nose” mini-game.

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MB1ES!!!1

Release Date: 8/16/09 Platform: Xbox 360 (Xbox Live Indie Games)
Just look at the title. Seriously. OK. One more time. Now, how serious can you really take this game? It’s been one of the best-selling indie games on Xbox Live since it was released, but that could be because people really just like games that only cost $1, and have zombies in it.
Imagine this: Sonic racing against AiAi from “Super Monkey Ball,” Beat from “Jet Set Radio” and Opa-Opa, the spaceship, from “Fantasy Zone.” “Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing” isn’t just your everyday kart racer; it’s packed full of classic Sega characters with which you can go head-to-head against your roommates with.
Travis Touchdown is back with his light-beam sword, and twisted 8-bit flare. From the brain of famed game developer Suda 51 and plays to lowest common denominator (which is always the best) in terms of its humor, “No More Heroes 2″ has you taking down the top 51 assassins, playing retro mini games to power up your character, and heading to the bathroom to save your game. There’s really no better way to relax between classes.

2009 was a good year for games, but it seemed like it was only a precursor the greatness to come in 2010. There’s a host of games currently slated for release sometime over the course of the year, and it looks like some of them are going to go down as true classics. Below, we’ve gone and collected 15 games that have serious potential to put a damper on your studies throughout the year. It may seem like a lot of games, but choose wisely, and you’re in for what could be the best year in gaming ever.

God of War III

Release Date: March 2010 Platform: PS3
The first entry of the “God of War” series on the PS3, and it’s the end of Kratos’ long journey. In his final showdown with the Gods, Kratos will take on Olympus and finally exact revenge for all the suffering they have put him through. You can pretty much guarantee that this will be one of the most epic releases of the year.

Bayonetta

Release Date: January 5, 2010 Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3
A hot witch with magical hair that covers her body in a leather-esque suit, with guns attached to the heels of her shoes. Need I say more? “Bayonetta” has the potential to be the craziest game of the year, and that’s just based on the main character. It’s birthed by the same minds that brought the world “Viewtiful Joe,” “Okami,” and “Devil May Cry” and is being developed by Platinum Games, the same studio that brought you 2009′s “MadWorld,” so, there’s a good chance that “Bayonetta” is going to rock.

BioShock 2

Release Date: February 9, 2010 Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3
The follow up to the best game of 2007 is nearly upon us. Head back to Rapture as a Big Daddy with an all new story, weapons, and an arm that’s a giant, upgradable drill. And, if that’s not enough for you, this time around, there’s multiplayer.

Metroid: Other M

Release Date: T.B.D. Platform: Wii
An unlikely collaboration between Nintendo and Team Ninja, “Other M” is the next step in the Metroid universe. Little is known about the game so far, except that it looks like it will reinvent the series, and give Wii owners a truly unique experience starring everyone’s favorite bounty hunter, Samus Aran.

It will be the first time a Mario game gets a true sequel on the same console that its predecessor was released on. “Super Mario Galaxy 2″ will follow up 2007′s “Super Mario Galaxy” by sending our plumber friend back into space for more gravity defying 3D platforming craziness.

Tatsunoko vs. Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars

Release Date: January 26, 2010 Platform: Wii2009 was a great year for 2D fighting games, but it was missing one thing, a new entry into Capcom’s VS. series. “Tatusnoko vs. Capcom” is the first new game in the series in years, and will be the first fighting game from Capcom (A.K.A. the masters of fighting) that will be specifically tailored to the Wii’s capabilities and controls.

Dark Void

Release Date: January 12, 2010 Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3
Capcom is taking this action adventure game into a new direction – up. “Dark Void” follows the travels of William Augustus Grey after he crashes in the Bermuda Triangle where he is teleported to a parallel universe. While it sounds a bit out there, there’s only one thing you need to know about the key features of this game: jet packs.

No More Heroes 2: Desperate Struggle

Release Date: January 26, 2010 Platform: Wii
It’s been three years since the events of “No More Heroes,” and Travis Touchdown has fallen from his top spot of the United Assasins Association. And he intends to reclaim it to avenge the death of his friend Bishop. The over-the-top gameplay, characters, and humor have all returned, making “No More Heroes” one of the most potentially entertaining games of the year.

Final Fantasy XIII

Release Date: March 9, 2010 Platform: PS3
When a “Final Fantasy” game gets released, it’s like the RPG world comes to a grinding halt, and “FFXIII” looks like it’s going to be Square Enix’s crowing achievement. With an updated battle system, a wildly in-depth story, and a whole new world to explore, “FFXIII” will have you racking up XP for months to come.

Shantae: Risky’s Revenge

Release Date: Q1 2010 Platform: DSi
“Risky’s Revenge” is a little different than all the other games on this list; it’s the follow-up to a Gameboy Color game that you’ve most likely never played, that came out seven years ago, and stars a half-genie with magic hair. While it seems like a sequel has been perpetually in development for all these years, it looks like it is finally going to be released as an episodic game for the DSi, and it’s looking like it’s going to be just as good as its predecessor.

Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction

Release Date: February 23, 2010 Platform: Xbox 360
Take everything you know about “Spinter Cell” and throw it out the window. In his 2010 adventure Sam Fischer has gone rogue and is looking for information about the death of his daughter. New gameplay elements, update graphics, and a deep storyline are sure to make “Conviction” completely unlike any of the previous games in the series.

Dante’s Inferno

Release Date: February 9, 2010 Platforms: Xbox 360, PS3
While it may be a bit different than the book you had to read for your theology class, “Dante’s Inferno” loosely follows the same story of Dante as he works his way through the circles of Hell. On the plus side, as disturbing as the book is, developer Visceral Games looks like they’re upping the ante, making it even more graphic and twisted.

Sin & Punishment 2

Release Date: Q1 2010 Platform: Wii
The U.S. missed out on the original N64 release of “Sin & Punishment,” but Nintendo is making up for that oversight, ten years later, with the release of the sequel. Bringing a unique style, and on-rails gameplay, Treasure has taken the “Punishment” experience to the next level, and created one of the most exciting, and potentially frustrating games of the year.

Check out ten of the best games of the year to help you fill up your free time this winter break.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Classes are over, and you just realized that you didn’t spend enough time taking advantage of your roomate’s bigass TV and game system. So, make up for lost time this winter break and get caught up on some Must-play games of ’09 before you head back to school in January. We’ve got you covered by putting together our list of the ten must play games of 2009 – they may not be THE ABSOLUTE AWESOMEST GAMES OF THE YEAR, but each of them brings something unique and worthwhile to the table, and you should absolutely spend some of your much needed time off with them.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC Release Date: 11/10/09
Why you need to play it: Spec Ops Mode
Sure, “Modern Warfare 2″ has a solid single player campaign, topped off with one of the best multiplayer experiences around, but the game was lacking the ability to play WITH a friend, instead of just against them. Spec Ops Mode changes all that. Try to tackle all of these uniquely tailored challenges that pull from the game’s main storyline with a friend in order to master each, and be awarded all three stars. A great addition to an amazing game.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii

Platform: Wii Release Date: 11/15/09
Why you need to play it: It’s multiplayer Mario.
It’s been almost fifteen years since Nintendo released a 2D Mario game on a console, but that isn’t the reason that you need to play this game. It’s because you, and three of your friends, get to play a 2D Mario game on a console, together. The game’s co-op completely changes how you, and your friends, play “Super Mario Bros.” Suddenly, even the little things like grabbing coins and jumping across pits has a whole new level of challenge added to it, as you try and avoid bumping into anyone as you do it.

Muramasa: The Demon Blade

Platform: Wii Release Date: 9/8/09
Why you need to play it: It’s gorgeous and surprisingly deep for a Wii game.
A lot of people say that Wii games are all boring party games that look like they should have come out on the Dreamcast. Well, “Marumasa: The Demon Blade” proves both of those points wrong. Not only is the game a virtual work of art, but the hack-n-slash gameplay, and impressively deep RPG elements prove that there is not only room for pretty games on the Wii, but also ones that make you think.

Borderlands

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC Release Date: 10/20/09
Why you need to play it: It combines FPS and RPG games in a new way, and then makes the game co-op
When two behemoth genres like First Person Shooters and Role Playing Games come together it usually causes more problems than it solves. However, “Borderlands” managed to find the sweet spot right in between grinding and fragging, and then made it so that you could play the entire game, from start to finish, with three of your friends. When you add in the fact that the game includes over three million different gun combinations, you’ve really got a solid package of a game here.

Batman Arkham Asylum

Platforms: PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PC Release Date: 8/25/09
Why you need to play it: It could be the best Batman game ever made.
It’s almost impressive how badly licensed properties usually translate to video games, but, in the past 30 years of video games, one game has emerged as proof that if people care enough, and the developers are given proper time to work on a game, that you can in fact make a good game that’s based on something else. That game is “Batman Arkham Asylum.” And, it’s not just good because it’s a Batman game … it’s just good.

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure

Platform: DS Release Date: 3/17/09
Why you need to play it: It’s Mario meets “Tetris”
Never has looking for a fancy outfit been so fun. You play as the great adventurer Henry Hatsworth as he goes in search of mystical articles of clothing that give him amazing powers. Along the way he happens to reopen a rift to an alternate, puzzle-based dimension where strange beings are invading from. Okay, the story is a little odd, but the gameplay mixes platforming and puzzling AT THE SAME TIME. It’s unlike anything else that came out this year, and should keep you entertained for weeks to come.

DJ Hero

Platforms: PlayStation 2, Playstation 3, Xbox 360, Wii Release Date: 10/27/09
Why you need to play it: It’s a whole new spin on rhythm games
The time has come to put away the plastic drums and microphones, and break out the wheels of steel. “DJ Hero” is unlike any other rhythm game on the market, allowing the player to get behind the turn tables and rack up the points as they mix some of the biggest hip-hop artist for their virtual club crowd. It’s got a whole new feeling to it, and that’s something the genre has been in search of for the last few years.

Demon’s Souls

Platform: PlayStation 3 Release Date: 10/7/09
Why you need to play it: It’s one of the most challenging, and therefore satisfying, games of the year.
Every now and then a game comes along that reminds you why there are difficulty settings on some games. “Demon’s Souls” is one of those games. Simply put; it’s hard, and you’re going to die… over and over again. It will drive some gamers mad, and make others nostalgic for a time when this level of difficulty wasn’t such a novel experience. At the same time, all that death makes getting anything done in this game bestow a level of accomplishment unlike any other title on this list or, for that matter, any other game that was released this year.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Platform: PlayStation 3 Release Date: 10/13/09
Why you need to play it: It’s one of the most cinematic experiences of the year.
Not playing “Uncharted 2″ would be be like missing the big summer action movie. Not only does it improve on the already impressive “Drake’s Fortune” but it ups the ante in almost every regard; from graphics, to controls, to adding in multiplayer, “Uncharted 2″ is this year’s Dark Knight.

Canabalt

Platforms: iPhone, Flash Release Date: 10/18/09 (iPhone)
Why you need to play it: It’s insanely addictive, and proof of what a small development team with limited time can do.
If you want games that will keep you occupied, play every other game on this list, but if you want a game that will get you addicted, play “Canabalt.” Its simplicity is striking in every way, and that’s what sucks you in. You run, and you jump. That’s all this game is. You don’t know what you’re running from, or why, but you need to get away, right now. And, the absolute best part, is that you can go play it right now, for free, AND you can take it with you on your iPhone. Your world should be complete now.

Got some time to kill, and an iPhone? Here's some of the best games to keep you occupied while you wait for your professor, again.

Run for your life in 'Canabalt'

For college students, Fall Semester seems to always include a lot of standing around in line. Whether you’re queued up at the cafe, waiting for that perpetually late professor to show up, or sitting in a hallway waiting to find out why you can’t register for classes, it’s always a good idea to keep your iPhone handy for these unavoidbale downtimes. You know the drill: wait, check Facebook, wait, send a text. And now that there are finally some worth playing on the iPhone, why not fire up a video game? App developers have really kicked up the quality of offerings, and we’ve made it past the phase where variations on “Bejeweled” where the only things available in the App Store. Here are some of the best ones that came out this semester – who knew waiting in line could be so much fun?

Big Buck Hunter Pro
It’s hunting … on your iPhone. You’ve most likely played the larger version at your local bar, but now you can take out some massive bucks on the go with “Big Buck Hunter Pro whereever you are. As an added bonus, this means you can finally get an entire trek in without someone bumping into your back while you’re trying to aim.
Price: $.99 More Info

Canabalt
When you boil down a lot of video games to their most basic mechanics there are two things that are the main components in most of the greatest games ever made: running and jumping, and that’s all “Canabalt” is. Run and jump from rooftop to rooftop as you presumably try to escape the giant monsters in the background. It’s so basic that its simply amazing – if only your stats class was the same way.
Price: $2.99 More Info

Groovin’ Blocks
Tired of “Tetris” already? You’ve been playing it since the 1980s – so it’s time to move on, and that’s where “Grooving Blocks” comes in. You already know how to play – just match up the different color blocks as they fall, but if you can do it in time with the beats to the music you’re bound to score some serious points. It’ll make you forget all about “Tetris,” and that test you should be studying for.
Price: $1.99 More Info

Backbreaker Football
Finally, a football game that actually works on the iPhone. “Backbreaker” is unique in that it takes the best part of football – running that long return to the endzone – and makes an entire game out of it. Use the iPhone’s accelerometer to change direct your player as he showboats across the one-yard line, or juke your oppents as they try and tackle you. It might not have as much action as the Rose Bowl, but it’s still a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.
Price: $.99 More Info

Doom Classic
You know it, you (may or may not) love it, but it’s one of the most important games to ever be released, and now you can play it on your iPhone. With 36 missions for you to tackle as a generic space marine, you’re bound to be over come with hordes of imps, as well as a little bit of nostalgia, as you take ‘em out the BFG 9000. Oh, and did I mention it’s an almost perfect version of “Doom,” complete with multiplayer, on your phone? I thought so.
Price: $6.99 More Info

2XL ATV Offroad
As a follow-up to “2XL Motocross,” the team at 2XL have added two wheels to their bikes, and made one of the most visually impressive games that you can find on the iPhone. But, even if graphics aren’t your thing, and you just prefer to hit the off-road track with your ATV, this game is a solid substitute, at least while you’re waiting in line at the bursar … again.
Price: $7.99 More Info

Super K.O. Boxing 2
Tired of heading to the gym to hit the speed bag? Well, if you’ve ever spent more than five minutes playing “Punch-Out,” “Super K.O. Boxing 2” is for you. It packs in an entire cast of zany characters, tight controls, and a whole lot of challenge as you work your way to the title belt. It’s not an easy road, but you’ll have a good time getting your face bashed in as you work your way there.
Price: $4.99 More Info

Family Guy Uncensored
Sometimes, when games that are based on TV shows that you love get made, bad things happen. Fortunately, that is not the case with “Family Guy Uncensored.” While it might not be an exact replica of the Griffin family’s exploits, there is a wide range of different game types that range from swinging in the jungle with a half-naked Quagmire to Chris flying a plane to take down that evil monkey in his closet. However, the Stewy levels that are based on “Mega Man” are pretty much worth the cost of the game alone.
Price: $2.99 More Info

Word Spin
Need something to get your brain juices flowing? Well, instead of “reading” or “doing homework” maybe you should take “Word Spin” for a … spin. Put your brain to the test as you try to form as many words using the onscreen wheels as possible. It’s a much better use of your brain cells’ activity than actually going to class or anything like that.
Price: $1.99 More Info

Rock Band
Carrying around your iPhone is a whole lot easier than lugging around those plastic guitars and drum kit to your friends dorm for the third time this week. With a stack of licensed tracks, and multiplayer, you don’t really have a reason to not give the mini version of “Rock Band” a go. But, ya never know, hitting those on screen notes might be easier with a guitar, at least after you’ve had a couple drinks.
Price: $6.99 More Info
