The Unlikely Disciple is the true story of Brown University sophomore Kevin Roose’s semester as an undercover student at Liberty University, the late Reverend Jerry Falwell’s “Bible Boot Camp” for young evangelical Christians.
Located in Lynchburg, Virginia, Liberty U. is the world’s largest evangelical college, a 10,000-student training ground for America’s Religious Right. Liberty students take courses like Creationist Biology and Evangelism 101, hear from guest speakers like Sean Hannity and Karl Rove, and follow a 46-page code of conduct – called “The Liberty Way” – that prohibits drinking, smoking, kissing, dancing, R-rated movies, and much more. Curious about the lives of his evangelical peers and hoping to discover common ground between his world and theirs, Roose – a secular Quaker whose parents once worked for Ralph Nader – decides to leave Brown and enroll at Liberty as a new transfer student.
