For many bands, a breakthrough album on par with Death Cab for Cutie's 2003 Transantlanticism might lead to some creative paralysis. But to hear Death Cab guitarist Chris Walla tell it, following up the most critically and commercially successful release of their career came as naturally as breathing: "If Transantlanticism was an inhale, Plans is the exhale." The metaphor is especially apt given the two albums' complimentary themes. Transatlanticism's concern with the emotional distances between people has expanded into Plans' heartfelt meditations on mortality, all conveyed through singer Ben Gibbard's intensely introspective lyrics and the band's unapologetically dramatic arrangements.
