Black Mountain just released their third studio album Wilderness Heart last week. Face Tha Music is a Brooklyn hip-hop artist whose official self-titled mixtape is available as a free download. Fight Fair is a California pop-punk band who just released their debut LP California Kicks this past summer. PM Today released their sophomore album In Medias Res in the spring. Quincy Mumford is a laid-back singer and guitarist who announced this summer that he is working on a new album.

Black Mountain
“The Hair Song”
I really dig this band. Everything about them just screams classical rock n’ roll. From their sound and their style, you can really tell that their influence lies heavily in late 60s – early 70s rock and that they understand the draw of a simplistic song. I couldn’t help but think of Dazed and Confused as I watched this video. Remember how the older sophomore girl liked Mitch Kramer? Didn’t you feel a similar vibe with the storyline here?

“My Favorite Song”
It’s sort of sweet to see a song where the man is handing control over to the woman he loves and really aiming to make sure she is pleased. I also like how the lyrics describe both glamorous and casual situations. It’s not just about the glitzy parties, it’s also about the backyard barbeques. Are these two a couple in real life? They would be cute together.

“California Kicks”
If you’re still craving that last bit of summer then this is a good track to be listening to. It’s all about beaches, surfing, and having a bunch of irresponsible and harmless fun.
PM Today
“Don’t Exist”
I think it’s cool that the lyrics are describing the singer’s disenchantment with a failed relationship, how he feels as though he’s been forced to suffer through lies and falsehoods, while, via the video, we’re watching the group interact on a set; what is essentially a false room. Very meta. It’s an interesting concept to play around with and I think it suits the song quite well.

“Lifted”
This artist cites Jack Johnson as a major influence on his website and its obvious from the deep, strong chords and the laid-back sound that he has managed to emulate his idol. Again, this is great if you’re looking to keep the summer feeling around for just a bit longer. I imagine it would be great to throw on for a study session as well. Or calming down after a tough class.
