Vote For This Week’s Best Freshmen Video

Alicia Witt is the well-known movie and television actress who released her self-titled debut EP last summer. Goons United by The New School is a South Florida based rap group who count Young Jeezy and Outkast amongst their influences. “Doo Doo” is the second single off Kosha Dillz’s album Beverly Dillz. The San Diego-based quintet Lights On have released their debut album Here Comes the Ocean. More Freshmen artists hailing from Florida this week, the band Transmit Now’s full length Downtown Merry-Go-Round is available now.

“Anyway”

I genuinely adore Alicia Witt as an actress (and would like to note that it is very difficult to make the cross-over from actor to musician) so I was a surprised that this video was so… dramatic. I think it would have been more effective if it was toned down just a bit. But she has a strong voice and she is an excellent musician. The song is pretty and the video is relatable in that we probably all, at one point or another, sat on the floor of a new empty apartment and cried over a break-up.

“Wow”

Well, it’s the typical rap video focused on cars, booty and bling, but it is wonderfully color-coordinated. I always have mixed feelings as a woman watching videos such as these. It’s impossible for me to ignore how the ladies are being objectified. I understand its “part of the genre,” but I don’t find it justifiable. And it does detract from the music. At least for me.

Kosha Dillz

“DooDoo”

I like the old school Atari and Nintendo references, those seem to be pretty popular these days. And despite my hesitation, the song ended up being rather catchy, there were quite a few clever quips involved in the lyrics, and the message is, after all, to let people just do their own thing. It would be interesting to watch Kosha Dillz perform live and see him free-style.

Lights On

“We Live Underground”

I think this group did a really good job of picking images to match their sound. Was anyone else reminded of the boat scene in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory? The dark feel of the music, the lights, and some of the pictures all brought that movie to mind.

Transmit Now

“Let’s Go Out Tonight”

I think this is a great take on the traditional sort of music video. There’s just the right of humor splashed into the scenarios to keep you entertained. It’s also hard to dislike a bunch of goofballs who don’t have a problem poking a bit of fun at themselves. My personal favorite was getting an entire limb stuck in the candy machine.
