The Aviation Orange recently emerged as one of the stars of CMJ; a hip band from Brooklyn whose self-titled debut album is out now. Hip-hop artist Terry Davis performs under the moniker Izza Kizza and recently released his second mixtape The Wizard of Iz. Quartet Lovehatehero is back with third album America Underwater. A guitar player from Australia who has played for the likes of Santana, Prince and Michael Jackson, Orianthi is out with her debut album Believe. Brothers Nick and Jonathan Diener are joined by Ryan Collins and Anto Boros to form The Swellers.

“Radio”

I really like that this video depicts a collaborative group project because at its core that is EXACTLY what a band should be. And there’s something really sweet about how this bunch wanted to highlight that fact. I also enjoy the hazy quality of the song, even if at times I wish it were a bit more upbeat.

“Ooh La La”

I can’t stop thinking about Scooby Doo and the Mystery Machine. I’m sorry but this trippy video could be mistaken for an episode of my favorite childhood cartoon. I like the beat of this song a long, but in general it’s a little muddled. The tempo of the lyrics is kind of all over the place and gets distracting. But the chorus is super catchy.

It’s interesting that they mixed the harshness of the sound against such an idyllic backdrop to create an unusual juxtaposition. I’m not quite sure the video makes any direct correlation to the song, but it’s fun to watch.

“According To You”

Anyone call for a rocking ggrrrrlll anthem? Cause we found one right here. Truth be told, this fine lady is so talented I would like to see her break the mold even more and get away from your standard pop song. But she’s still so young and such a phenomenal guitar player, that I am sure we have yet to see half of what she can do.

The Swellers

“Fire Away”

I think we all can relate to the idea of wanting to shed our boring formal day-to-day selves and run off and be completely free. The song, at least the way I interpret it, seems to be about that moment where you have a crisis of conscience and need to make a change. PLUS pirates! I dig it.
