Pick This Week’s Best Freshmen Video
Posted October 26th, 2009 by LindsayA Brooklyn band known for their soulful sound, the Amabassadors will soon be releasing a self-titled EP. Originally a member of The Freestyle Kingz, Chalie Boy has gone solo with his debut album Makin My Way 2. Originally from Minneapolis, Minneosota, the group Solid Gold earned critical acclaim and much buzz for LP Bodies of Water. Named for the front woman, band Lissy Trullie released their EP Self-Taught Learner earlier this year. All childhood friends, the group Vedera return with their third studio album Stages.

Ambassadors
“Tropisms”
When I took a first glance at this video, my initial thought was, “It kind of looks like what Alanis Morrisette did for Ironic.” Then I thought, “wow, I’m really showing my age.” I looked up tropism and I guess the easiest way to explain it would be to say it’s when an organism reacts to outside stimuli; much like a plant moving toward the light. Since this seems to be a track about impulsive, often not well-thought out, emotions, I like the play on words. Rather clever.
Chalie Boy
“I Look Good”
Oh my mama. He threw references to Chuck Taylor’s and the Buddha in there. No lie, the line “Ballin’ is a drug that I don’t mind abusing,” is pretty amazing.
Solid Gold
“Bible Thumper”
This group is known for their somewhat sad dance tracks, and the underwater effect is undoutably eerie and matches up nicely with the album’s title. However, I wanted to see more energy within the video’s concept. Don’t just float around in the pool. Gasp for breathe! Struggle! Flail! Make the viewer invest in the outcome. You know?
Lissy Trullie
“Ready For The Floor”
I was surprised by the passion in Trullie’s voice. The band’s sweet girlish name is somewhat misleading, as her vocals carry a darker tone than I anticipated. The song and the video are nothing terribly unique but I couldn’t help but like them instantly. (The Herve Lager fashion doesn’t hurt.) I’m not sure I really understand why the band is simply HER name but she is mesmerizing.
Vedera
“Satisfy”
Kristen May has a very nice set of pipes. Her voice has a lovely echo-y quality to it that I truly enjoy. However, I think a lot more should have been done with this video. It falls a bit flat. But, I do think this band will receive a lot of support this week in the comments section.
So kiddos… who will it be? Vote and write your opinion below.
Voting runs from 11 AM (EST) Monday until 2 PM (EST) on Friday.
