Vote For This Week’s Best Freshmen Video
Posted October 5th, 2009 by LindsayBlack Dada, real name Davidson Pierre, first gained notoriety for his mix tapes before signing with Universal Records and hitting the Billboard Charts with his newest single. Although frontman Christopher Owens has an interesting back story, the group Girls provide enough noise in their on right with an album named Album; rated best new music by Pitchfork. Brooklyn-based band Jupiter One has recently released their 2nd full-length album Sunshower and are due to go on tour with Regina Spektor. Turbotronics is a side-project of filmmakers Jessica Burstein and Robbie Norris, who are currently promoting their film Abbie Cancelled. R&B artist Maurice “Verse” Simmonds first LP Stories of a Bachelor, which has yet to hit stores, is full of edge and sensuality.

“Imma Zoe”
Apparently “Zoe” is slang for someone who demonstrates strength. When the video first started, I expected some sort of political commentary to follow. And I do think it’s trying to do that, in a way. I was rather dismayed to witness it fall into a showy exploitation of cars, motorcycles, women and jewelry. I’m afraid that the mixture of images comes off as confusing, although I would not argue with trying to aspire people to success. I am just concerned about the definition of “success” that this video is projecting.
Girls
“Lust For Life”
I really enjoy this song because, well… who HASN’T felt this way? That moment where you’re completely fed up and you want the things you want and you want them immediately? The whole package, song and video, is just a lovely gorge of venting intermixed with odd, sexual characters. It’s all so gluttonous. To thumbs up. Also, polaroids. Can we bring those back?
Jupiter One
“Flaming Arrow”
A pretty standard pop song that is touched with originality by its delightfully adorable video. The animation adds just enough of a quirky vibe, while still allowing the song to remain relatable. The whole package ends up coming off as charming rather than trite. Nicely done.
Turbotronics
“Corporate Lady”
This video is strange to me. Obviously a parody, but it hits an off note. It has more to do with a surreal sense of male fantasy, than about women breaking free of the corporate cycle. That being said, the depiction of dull endless meetings and tiresome office banter is not entirely inaccurate. And I can see how there’s a tribute to 80s videos taken place here; smacks of “Hot For Teacher” and “Addicted to Love.” But overall, I want the song to have more razzle dazzle, more sparkle. It comes off rather flat. What makes those 80s videos so spectacular is their willingness to go over the top, which is lacking here despite a girl-on-girl makeout sess.

“Buy You A Round”
This is not quite my cup of tea, but it may be yours, so I don’t really feel as though I’m in a position to be making judgments on it. Let me know if you like it and why in the comments.
This week it has to be Girls for me, because I find that song so intriguing. Who’s your pick? Polls are open, let the voting begin!
Voting runs from 11 AM (EST) Monday until 2 PM (EST) on Friday.
