Pick This Week’s Freshmen Video
Posted July 20th, 2009 by mtvUOriginally a pianist, Diane Birch discovered her penchant for singing and songwriting to bring us the LP Bible Belt. After changing names and adding faces, Christian rock band Family Force 5 released remix album Dance or Die with a Vengeance this past May. Ryeisha Berrain, known by her moniker Rye Rye, was hand-picked and signed by M.I.A., who also appears on her single “Bang.” Raised in Nashville, Tennessee and influenced by the town’s musicality, Spree Wilson is soon set to release the Evil Angel EP. Teenage sibling duo Ivan and Ada defy age discrimination with their band Tiny Masters of Today.

“Nothing But A Miracle”
Birch reminds me a little of Tracy Chapman. Wow. Just dated myself there, didn’t I? Anywhoo, the video is not fancy, but perfectly suited to the song; dark and bleak, but still beautiful. I really could have done without the whole “five stages of grief” theme (wasn’t necessary) but overall the bluesy, raspy tone of Birch’s vocals intrigued me and definitely made me admire her raw talent.

“Dance or Die”
These guys remain a little crazy and a lot campy, but they unabashedly own their own gimmicks so I can’t say I mind them. It wouldn’t be my first go-to choice but I can understand the appeal of their driving buzzy beats. I have a feeling they’ll also have a strong show of fan support. Let’s see if I’m psychic, shall we?
Rye Rye feat. M.I.A.
“Bang”
M.I.A. isn’t really doing much here but gracing this track with her musical fairy godmother Midas touch. But Rye Rye really is a revelation, working that cocky attitude of hers to full advantage. The video is a nice accompaniment to the song, which I find a bit redundant at the 2:30 mark. However, the visual allows Rye Rye to make a fine showing of her dance skills and considering she’s such a young 18 years old, chances are we have the next Santigold on our hands. (Although, I do hate to make comparisons.) I think the whole package is fantastic. Love seeing strong, confident women represent this genre.
Spree Wilson
“Word”
By far, one of the more unique Freshmen entries we’ve had in a while. I can’t even figure out how to describe this beat. It has currents of an 80s-like feel with the heavy keyboard synths, but at the same time its dark rather dangerous undertone keeps it from being either a strict pop or hip-hop song. The ominous effect is delightful. I’m kind of enjoying how I’m not able to classify it. Keeps one on their toes, no? I would also suggest checking out “I Am.”
Tiny Masters Of Today
“Pop Chart”
They’re cute, they’re fun, the video shows they have an awareness of how they’ll be perceived so… I’m excited to see what happens with Tiny Masters of Today. I want them to go out into the world, grow up a bit, and return to blow our minds. Because they can already produce a really solid-pop song, so they’re totally capable. Now they need that life experience to round out their talent. While this video is concrete, I can’t help but wonder what they’ll have for us around the corner.
I’m honestly having a hard time choosing a pick this week. I admire Diane Birch’s vocals, Family Force 5’s tricks, Rye Rye’s attitude, Spree Wilson’s originality, and the creativity of those two youngsters in Tiny Masters of Today. Ultimately I think I have to go with Rye Rye here for her presence alone. Not many could work a room the way this girl can and I hope we see more of her soon. Let me know what you’re thinking.
