Longtime hip-hop and reggae sensation Heavy D is back, and in mtvU’s Hot Seat. See if he can handle answering our burning questions.
Q: Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Heavy D: Returning home from tour, 2 blocks away from my house, there were 2 steep hills. As we get to the top of the 2nd hill, the bus driver called out, “Aw damn, the brakes just went out!” The bus started going down the hill, side-swapping cars and stuff. It finally came to a stop and we all got out, luckily unscathed, and walked to my crib.
Q: What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Heavy D: Philosophy. I love learning about the thought process of some of the deep thinkers and their famous quotes. I’ve collected over 1000 quotes over the years.
Q: What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Heavy D: It varies. It’s probably New Orleans because it’s always felt like another country with the different dialects and languages. I haven’t been back since Katrina but I’m sure it has the same vibe.
Q: What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Heavy D: “Never surrender!” If you have an idea or a dream, it’s best to not talk about it with anyone because others will doubt you!
Q: What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Heavy D: Variation of things. Studio One Reggae (it’s the Motown of reggae); John Mayer, Rakim and Rolling Stones
Q: The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
Heavy D: 60 Minutes and 24/7 (HBO 4 week series on boxing)
Q: What’s the first concert you ever saw - how was it?
Heavy D: Run DMC - Raging Hell Tour. 1st time I saw Beastie Boys. It was the 1st year that we got signed and we were given tickets to the show…in the nose bleed section!
Q: What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Heavy D: My music, my personal toiletries and a slew of dvds, specifically, Uptown Saturday Night, Godfather 1 & 2 and Midnight Run
Q: Who are your major musical influences?
Heavy D: Bob Marley, SuperCat, Curtis Mayfield, Prince, Stevie Wonder and the Cold Crush Brothers
Q: Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Heavy D: This a great time in your life; you are being introduced to other cultures which includes personalities, religions, food, music, ideologies and different perspectives which add to the material process of each individual. Therefore, you are truly in the prime of your life. Soak it up!!!
