The Joy Formidable

Hey all. So I know it’s been on your minds, right? What the heck is Lindsay listening to RIGHT NOW? Ohmigod, stop fretting cause I will tell you! Give me like a second. Sheesh. (wink)

Everyone is showing so much love for The Pains of Being Pure of Heart at the minute… so I will show them mine! I grew up in the late 80s and upon the original listen all I could think was, “Oh. My childhood. Flashing before my eyes.” The fuzzy, buzzy, poppy upbeat sound made me feel incredibly nostalgic. At first I wanted Peggy Wang East’s voice to be a bit stronger when she joined in with those harmonies, but then they sort of grew on me: the way she chimes in very gently is actually the perfect accompaniment. You can view the video for “Everything With You” over at Pitchfork, although I am much more partial to “Come Saturday” and “This Love is F**king Right!” (Once you see the title you fall for it right away. Even though you know that is its intention, you can’t help it.) I’m glad they have become the new blogosphere darlings as it seems to be genuinely deserved. They do this sound justice.

When I’m looking for a really good music find, I tend to turn to Connor and Nathaniel over at I Guess I’m Floating and they never seem to disappoint me. Those kids listen to absolutely everything. One of Connor’s recently posted treasures is indie-pop band Fanfarlo. I seem to really dig anything coming out of London these days, as you will soon see, so it makes sense that I would get attached to this group as well. Their album Resevoir was just out this past Valentine’s Day but I was too busy listening to Zack’s mixtape to notice. Check out the bands website. They’re quite entertaining. I can’t stop listening to “I’m a Pilot” as I’m in love with the song-title as well. If you’re still not convinced here is a 2007 Black Cab Session sure to sway you. I’m so happy to find them on my radar now.

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but our own mtvU blogger Taylor is a musical genius. I am dead serious. There is not a band I mention, song I’ve heard or up and coming artist I’ve found that Taylor hasn’t heard of first. He is forever has me saying, “wait, who?” The kid is a frickin’ music encyclopedia. So fair is fair when I say, I rely on him for much of my education and schooling when it comes to new talent. He introduced me to The Joy Formidable; a group that makes me 65% happier every time I listen. Take a look at Taylor’s post on Music For Kids Who Can’t Read Good and give their song “Cradle” a listen. It has this maddening dizzy effect to it that you can just lose yourself in.

I was originally on Neon Gold to show off a little admiration for Marina and the Diamonds but got distracted by new find Ex Lovers instead.

WANT.TO.SEE.THIS.BAND.LIVE.NOW.PLEASE. Come to New York City! Since I will not be making it over to London anytime soon. But see? Pattern. Me + UK + music = loves. What a frickin’ happy little gig that would be, eh? And yes. You might have noticed that by now I tend to judge music on how it can potentially up my happiness level. Another pattern! This song makes me want to sway and burst into a frenzy of dance magic. (what movie? C’mon. I know you know.) I would go by Ex Lovers MySpace for multiple listens.

Alright I’ve given away enough goodies for now, better save some for next time. Also, if you have any suggestions for me based on what you’re seen here please leave in the comments section below or follow me on Twitter at LindsH.
