I raved about Phoenix’s new album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, on my own blog a few weeks back for multiple reasons: Firstly, the album is flawless. Secondly, the album title and artwork are flawless. Thirdly, not only is “1901″ flawless, but “Lisztomania”, the band’s second single and first video, is… well… flawless. The song immediately caught my ear at first listen, and has been playing at every DJ set I’ve done for the past month.
Everything from the catchy intro to the Strokes-y guitar line screams hit, which they proved a few weeks back by rocking the SNL set and catapulting them into the public eye. Of course, “Lisztomania” is far from the band’s first amazing track. Basically, Sofia Coppola’s better half (lead singer Thomas Mars) and the other boys from Paris have put together one of the most complete pop tracks in recent memory. More educated listeners no doubt have heard Phoenix’s uniquely catchy stylings from their older albums, on songs like “Long Distance Call”, “Run Run Run”, and “I’m an Actor”, to name a few, but Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is the band’s third album, the one that defines their career.
By the third album, a solid indie band must point themselves in a direction; they must have formulated their sound. This album is just that: the one that undoubtedly forces the band into the public conscience. What a coming out party. Check out the video below and be sure to pick yourself up a copy of Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix when it drops May 25th. Get on the bandwagon before it fills up.
