Why do I love Passion Pit? Could it be because Michael Angelakos wrote the EP “Chunk of Change” for his girlfriend and this warms my little grinchy heart? Or could it be because the band is from Boston home of my boys in Red Sox? NOPE. I love them because they rock the motherfrickin’ house down and I was not disappointed when I saw them live FOR THE FIRST TIME (not the first time they’ve played live but my first personal time seeing them live) at the Bowery last night.
I do have to stop here and give a shout to my fellow mtvU bloggers (Adrian, Zack, and Taylor) for turning me onto the group. Passion Pit became quite the blogosphere darling in 2008 and it really does seem as if they are poised to hit it big now in the ‘09. Ever since first listen, they have been streaming through my headphones… and that did kind of surprise me because I am not huge into that synchy-pop stuff all the time. I’m an old-fashioned gal who favors an acoustic guitar. But the band ensnared me with their catchy keyboard hooks and I enjoy the pitchy quality of Angelakos’s voice. It’s a nice organic contrast to their frothy, polished sound.
Speaking of lyrics, while everyone goes crazy over “Sleepyhead” (and don’t get me wrong I love this too) I tend to freak out over “Smile Upon You” and was overjoyed when they played renditions of both last night. I love the lines “there’s a place/in this world/where people like me are found/by people like you” because c’mon now. Don’t we all just want someone to find us and hug us and totally love us for being our little weirdo selves? Yes. We do. The only thing missing for me was “Cuddle Fuddle.” Where was it?! For some reason the opener of this song reminds me of little fuzzy cartoon bunnies dancing. There were also a couple of songs off the new album that were a little bit longer than what was featured on the EP so I am excited to check those out again. The band mentioned the album would be out in May so here’s hoping.
Anywhoo, check out the vid for “Sleepyhead” or buy their singles “Sleepyhead/Better Things” ON VINYL over at Neon Gold, who is also hosting a party tomorrow for Giantess at the Delancey so if you happen to be in New York City swing by and say hello to me and Adrian!
