Motion City Soundtrack’s “Her Words Destroyed My Planet”

Motion City Soundtrack

The problem with writing a post on Motion City Soundtrack is that it’s really hard to refrain from using the word “catchy” a thousand times over. If there’s anything these pop-punk heavyweights have demonstrated since their explosion into the scene in 2003 it’s that they know what goes into writing a memorable tune. Although they have yet to strike pop gold, the Minnesota five-piece’s increasing popularity and graduation from Epitaph Records show that they are far from reaching their peak. Having released 2005’s seminal Commit This to Memory and its explosive 2007 follow-up, Even If It Kills Me, it seems that MCS is poised to cement their positions as masters of power pop with the release of their Columbia debut, My Dinosaur Life, on January 19th.

The guys have already released two singles off of their upcoming album. The first of these is “Disappear”, a song which is rather heavy for the band’s standards but sports one of the catchiest choruses of their career. The second and reason for this post is “Her Words Destroyed My Planet”, front-man Justin Pierre’s ode to the devastating end of a past relationship. Having lived through years of misery, Pierre now finds himself starting life anew as he learns Japanese, shaves off that beard, and in this writer’s humble opinion wrongly sells off his xbox to Jimmy down the street, all metaphorically-significant changes he would not have made had his life never abruptly fallen apart. The song sticks to Pierre’s usual style of songwriting with lyrics that at first seem to follow a confusing stream of consciousness but ultimately make perfect sense (something that can’t exactly be said about the Mars Volta). Throw in the usual Moog and guitar love and tada!: you’ve got another excellent song churned out by the MCS machine.
