So let’s see, this is the ninth video Manchester Orchestra has released for their latest album, Mean Everything to Nothing? Usually I’d say that that’s a bit too many, but when you’ve got Clay Lipsky and Jason Bognacki on your side you can do no wrong. As I mentioned a while ago, the new indie-rock giants decided that they would collaborate with the two filmmakers to make a video for every song off of the album. Having seen their work on “I Can Barely Breathe,” a single off of I’m Like a Virgin Losing a Child, it was evident that this partnership was meant to be.
As far as the video for “Tony the Tiger” goes, I’d say it’s one of the least exciting of the bunch (i.e., no bear attacks). But this is only appropriately so; the track perfectly exemplifies the minimalist side of the band’s music. Some people may not be into that. I, for one, am. So how does that translate into the video? Basically it’s just the band setting up and practicing for a show. But even so, you lay the duo’s trademark crisp, vaudevillian effect onto anything and I’ll watch. Lipsky and Bognacki take a sound check and make it into a beautiful thing. Most importantly, they make me want to be a part of the Manchester Orchestra live experience (which I painfully have yet to do so). Those of you who are fans of the band, and Mean Everything, will undoubtedly be pleased with their latest single and video; a nice addition to what has already become an impressive collection complementing a fantastic album.
