Illuminate-d by Lydia’s Latest Video

LydiaI want to get my two cents in about something. You may have noticed that one of last week’s Freshmen entries was Lydia, who’s video Lindsay said was “trying to pull off some Alice in Wonderland-like theme” but didn’t manage to do so successfully. Well, she’s right – beats me what the storyline is here. But you have to admit: the video is awful pretty. The same goes for their music.

“I Woke Up Near The Sea” is the first single off of Lydia’s album, Illuminate. The video for this song has only now made its way into the hands of the Music Blog. Better late than never, right? Illuminate was unexpectedly one of my favorite albums of 2008. I didn’t really expect much from these guys after listening to their debut release, This December; It’s One More and I’m Free, which came across as an honorable but lackluster effort at producing a passionate album. But Illuminate immediately blew me away, comparison aside. To put it simply, every song off of the album is beautiful. The instrumentals, namely the keys and guitar, blend together perfectly to craft scenes in my mind that aren’t too far off from the video’s attempt at re-creating Alice in Wonderland or Labyrinth. Top that off with Leighton Antelman’s phenomenal vocals and you’ve got yourself quite the listening experience.

So there’s my endorsement of Lydia despite their heart-wrenching loss last week. Whether or not the video actually crafts some sort of storyline shouldn’t stop you from enjoys its beauty, complemented by the like-minded music.
