“In New York, Everything Is Tropical” was the one song off of Paris that I wasn’t able to hear before writing my last post on Kuroma. I stand by what I said about the rest of the album, but this track is pretty much completely different from everything else I heard. And definitely in a good way.
If the classics aren’t your kind of thing, then you’ll be happy to know that “In New York” leans heavily towards the indie pop side of the music. The track definitely sports a happier tone than any other song off of the album, and the music video definitely drives that point home. As much as I really didn’t want to make a MGMT reference in this post, I’m going to anyways. You can’t watch it and say that the bright images flashing all over the screen don’t remind you of the visually-pleasing, but possibly seizure-inducing artwork in MGMT’s video for “Time to Pretend.” But I loved that video so in the end, who really cares?
Similarities aside, the Kuroma video for “In New York, Everything Is Tropical” lays the aforementioned trippy graphics over footage of Hank Sullivant strolling through the Big Apple. Whether he’s holding up a boombox in front of Wall Street or singing out in Times Square, this child of Athens, GA demonstrates a good degree of comfort and connection with NYC. In turn, it’s made this blogger very excited for his visit to the city this weekend. Or perhaps it’s the video’s LOLcat reference? Either way, you can expect me to be listening to this song over and over on the bus ride up.
