Handsome Furs Produce Retro-Cool Rock

Handsome FursHandsome Furs is made up of Dan Boeckner, one of the lead singer/songwriters in Wolf Parade (which happens to be one of my favorite bands) and his keyboardist wife, Alexei Perry. Although it seems to me that Dan saves his best work for Wolf Parade (see “This Heart’s On Fire”, “Language City” for examples), his latest album under the Furs moniker, Face Control, definitely has its moments and “I’m Confused” is probably the best one. Plus, I’m a big fan of husband/wife band duos and bands from Canada that don’t end in -ickleback.

The in-your-face wailing guitar riff and 80’s goth synths that are heard at the beginning of “I’m Confused” give you a good idea of what you’re in for here: a driving, angsty rock song with a mixture of lively rocking and retro cool. Dan’s agitated, gravelly vocals mesh very well with the song and I imagine this is an absolute rager live. The music video has the band playing a house party that’s attacked by zombies who spit black vomit and it features a sweet bicycle chase. There’s really not enough bike chases in movies and everyone’s who’s seen E.T. knows how awesome they are. Watch the video below.
