Before you read this review, understand that I was completely and totally ready to spit vitriol when I heard I was being assigned a Flo Rida song. Don’t get me wrong, “Low” was plenty catchy, but those who read my blog understand that I have different tastes in hip-hop and normally harbor an immense dislike toward your typical mainstream ringtone rapper. That being said, my extraordinarily low expectations for the “Right Round” were blown away, which demonstrates Flo Rida’s growth from one-hit wonder to relevant superstar. Granted, it’s difficult to go wrong when you sample one of the most recognizable songs in American pop history (that would be Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record)”. The song has already has immense success, rising to the top of the Billboard charts, but what makes it different than your run-of-the-mill electro-pop sample is Flo Rida’s nuanced flow and stylized swagger. Dillard (A.K.A. Flo Rida) must have realized that he could have a slice of the success afforded to the likes of Britney Spears if he attempted to follow the public consciousness and reimagine the standard club hit. Everything from the chorus to the chopped up vocals to the disco/electronica/dance themed video screams mega-hit, and thats just what the song is. The most original and lyrically brilliant song this is not, but Flo Rida has crafted quite an entertaining hip-pop jam, sure to please the ears of many a club-goer for months to come.
Love,
Zack
[Ed.'s note: Just announced today, Flo Rida will also be one of mtvU's Spring Break Performers this year in Panama City Beach!]
