At the beginning of the year, the crazy kids over at IGIF turned me onto a little known band called Fanfarlo, who had recently self-released their debut LP Resevoir. Since I like when bands take charge of their own music and trust Connor and Nate’s recommendations, I decided to check them out. Cut to June 2009 where Reservoir is making the #3 slot on my list for “Top Ten So Far” and I’ve basically become obsessed with their soothing, enthusiastic tunes.
They kicked off a US tour in Seattle and have now found their way to NYC, playing a stand-up show at The Bowery Ballroom last night. As it was my first time seeing the group live, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect but doubted they would disappoint me. I do so love being right.
While playing such favorites as “Harold T. Wilkins, Or How to Wait For a Very Long Time,” “Pilot,” and “The Walls Are Coming Down” against a backdrop of flags and Christmas tree lights, Simon Balthazar hopped all around the stage staying in perfect pitch with violinist Cathy Lucas. I want to say that Lucas is the member I am beyond impressed with having watched her the most, or at least when I wasn’t fascinated with Simon’s wild hair, but truthfully, every person in the band is equally remarkable. Lucas just has this wonderful stately grace about her when she plays. Perhaps because strings seem so delicate to me. In any given song they pull forth a variety of instruments, anything from a mandolin to a glockenspiel to a saw. Leon Beckenham even rocked the melodica at one point. What’s immensely interesting to watch is how everyone switches back and forth between several pieces of equipment, often alternating their places on stage.
Their beautiful rendition of “Luna” was far and away my favorite of the night, although I remain disappointed that “If It Is Growing” remains a song I have yet to hear in person. Please check out the band’s website to purchase Resevoir. They deserve a great deal of support. And if you happen to live in NYC, tickets are still available for their show at The Bell House tonight.
