It’s fitting that Camera Obscura’s new album is titled My Maudlin Career, since the Glasgow-based indie pop band has made their name on sweetly melancholic and sentimental tunes. The themes of heartache and nostalgia continue on the new album, as can be seen on the crazy infectious lead-off track “French Navy”.
Tracyanne Cambell’s convicting vocals tell all about the fleeting nature of love while the spirited keyboards and strings instrumentation flutter playfully. The chorus features one of the Camera Obscura’s catchiest melodies ever (which is saying a lot for this band). The song’s accompanying video tells the story cleverly through quick cuts of a romantic couple prancing through Europe while we slowly see them drifting apart. The flash edits perfectly matches the energy of the track as well as the tumultuous relationship seen on screen.
