I’m in the same boat as Lindsay when it comes to Asher Roth. It’s hard to tell how serious the rapper takes himself, especially in light of the new video for his single, “I Love College.” But with this concern aside, you have to take “College” for what it is: a fun song. Asher Roth already had the whole college thing going for him, so why not drive that point home with his first video? The video for “I Love College” places Asher Roth in the middle of an epic frat party that makes every social gathering I’ve encountered in my college years seem like an eight year old’s birthday celebration. Might also be because the Cool Kids were there. But this Van Wilder-esque homage to college life contains an obscene amount of references to party life that will a strike a chord with just about any student. And even if you don’t party as hard as Mr. Roth, you can’t blame kids for loving “I Love College.” Any song that makes it this big and manages to squeeze in a few chants like “Chug Chug Chug!” or “Freshmen Freshmen Freshmen!” deserves some sort of respect in my book. But alas, we can’t all pull a Van Wilder. I’m hoping to see more out of Asher Roth. Keep it fun, but maybe go a little easy on the keg stands.
