A Slice of Rhythm Heaven

Rhythm HeavenYour professor’s late … again, and you’ve got a few minutes to go before the 15 minute rule kicks in … what’s a gamer to do? Break out your Nintendo DS and play some Rhythm Heaven, that’s what.

Designed by the team that brought you the WarioWare games, Rhythm Heaven is chock full of quick, mini-game goodness that should keep you entertained until you decide to bail on class. That’s not even the best part; there are over 50 rhythm games included in this package, and they all have an awesome soundtrack (overseen by Japanese record producer Tsunku) which intermingles the game’s music and audio cues with the gamplay of tapping, sliding, and flicking the DS screen with the stylus.

This isn’t the first time that Nintendo has released a bite sized rhythm-inspired mini-game collection, it’s just the first time it’s coming out in the U.S. Japan has been playing games in the Rhythm Heaven series (known as Rhythm Tengoku across the Pacific) since 2006, when the original game was released for the Game Boy Advance. The original’s a favorite of GBA import enthusiasts, but, it’s completely in Japanese, and since it was never localized, English-speaking gamers missed out on one of the best games ever released for Nintendo’s tiny portable.

So, before your teacher shows up, get a few games of Glee Club, Rhythm Rally, or Scratch DJ. You might not end up learning how to scratch as good as DJ Revolution, Rhythm Heaven can be your own little man vs. machine. It’s is unlike any other rhythm game you’ve played before, and is definitely worth checking out if you think you’re up for the challenge of keeping the beat with your stylus.

So, that’s just one way to pass some time before class with your DS, but there are others… many others. What’s your favorite game waste 15 minutes with?
