House Band: Theophilus London Live In NYC

  by mtvU.

Emerging rapper Theophilus London is cool. Like effortlessly cool. The Brooklyn MC has an old-school side to him both musically and visually, and his sound is a genre-bending one with a definite left field bent. His latest single, “Why Even Try,” features Sara Quinn from indie-poppers Tegan And Sara. The hook is irresistibly catchy, sounding like a throwback vintage cut from back in the day. London’s sound is catching the ear of tastemakers the world round, and he’s already worked with folks like Mark Ronson (in the side project Chauffeur, which also features the Dap Kings and Sam Sparro), Damon Albarn from Blur, Gorillaz and Dave Sitek’s Maximum Balloon. Not bad for a guy who doesn’t even have a full-length record out. After creating some buzz with the exciting This Charming Mixtape teaser in 2009, London dropped the Lovers Holiday EP earlier this year. He’s now putting the finishing touches on his debut album and getting ready to dominate the hipster hip-hop scene (Kanye West, take note). Citing odd influences like Kraftwerk, Prince and Michael Jackson, the alternative rapper is definitely cut from a unique mold and is certainly one to watch. Don’t sleep on this name; Theophilus London is one that you won’t soon forget.
