Mark Sheehan, guitarist for The Script hops into this week’s Hot Seat and answers our burning questions.
1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Mark Sheehan: We played a huge concert in Germany about a year ago, after the show myself and my guitar tech decided to get some R+R. The hotel had a lovely spa area so we went there. After we had the swim/sauna etc we were just getting dressed in the mens dressing room, with nothing but towels around us at this point. Then all of a sudden an old woman walked in and right before our eyes she de-robed. We couldn’t believe our eyes. We both BOLTED for the door and left all our s*** behind, there was now way we were going to watch somebody’s grandmother naked…hells no. . We had to go report it to the receptionist. So she was all embarrassed and apologized profusely before she entered the dressing room to explain to the old lady that she had made a mistake and gone to the wrong dressing room. After about 2 mins the receptionist came back out, RED FACED and said, “ITS A MAN!” .. well we just fell to the floor splitting our sides with laughter. but the worst part was we had to go back in and get dressed ourselves. The old man (still debatable) stood there naked shouting stuff at us in German… we just tried to block his jiggly bits from our minds while gathering our things.. It was very very funny.. I’m still scarred.
2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Mark Sheehan: Creative writing. As a song writer I think it would benefit me. We’re already really creative with our lyrics etc but i can imagine it would be out there if I knew the art of creative writing too.
3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Mark Sheehan: Oooh! this is a toughy! Ive spent so much time in LA that it holds a special place in my heart. However Nashville is one of my fave places in the states. The music culture is just amazing. the people are great. Maybe I’ll retire there someday. People will find me playing in some bar on a weekday;)
4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Mark Sheehan: Don’t be try be better than your competitors, try and better yourself.
5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Mark Sheehan: U2’s new one ;) Gooo on the boys!
6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
Mark Sheehan: The Lovely Bones was pretty good. I’m currently reading The Book Thief very good.
7. What’s the first concert you ever saw - how was it?
Mark Sheehan: It was House of Pain when they played the Tivoli in Dublin. I was young and couldn’t afford a ticket so under the advice of a very clever friend I put some cable over my shoulder I pretended i was working for the crew and just sailed right in. I loved it! It was a freebie so maybe that’s why too;)
8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Mark Sheehan: My guitars, My notepad and my Laptop.
9. Who are your major musical influences?
Mark Sheehan: I’m so diverse when it comes to music. But i suppose i gravitate towards David Bowie.. Bob Marley and the Police. Gotta love those guys right???
Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Mark Sheehan: Don’t fart in your space suit… lol. If you don’t know The Script then you have to come to a live show, its where its at! I promise you will walk away with a new take on live music;) If you see or meet us on the road come say Hi! we love to hang…
