The Hot Seat: The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus

What’s in a name? Not much, according to Middleburg, Florida quintet The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, who say their unusual moniker is completely arbitrary. They show a similar disregard for genre labels, switching from metal to pop-punk to pop with gleeful abandon. Weeks before releasing their debut, Don’t You Fake It, The Red Jumpsuit Appartus guitarist Elias Reidy took time out to talk to mtvU’s Hot Seat about keeping it real, psyching out and the perils of plane travel.

Q & A With Elias Reidy from The Red Jumpsuit Appartus

Q: Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
A: Our craziest touring experience so far would definitely have to be when we flew home from L.A. and our plane almost crashed. Everyone was saying their last prayers or crying and the plane went into a free fall for a few seconds. It was without a doubt the scariest experience any of us have ever had.

Q: What type of college class would you most want to take and why?
A: Probably psychology, I like helping people with their troubles.

Q: What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
A: There are a lot of great cities but I’d have to say we’re very fond of the state of Ohio in general — we always have a great time out there.

Q: What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
A: “Serve high principles, not temporary conveniences.”

Q: What’s in heavy rotation in your mp3/CD player right now?
A: Circa Survive - Juturna

Q: The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
A: I can’t say that I’ve been on top of my “book-reading” game for the last decade, but I wouldn’t be able to live without Family Guy, any of the Cops shows and random MTV programs.

Q: What’s the first concert you ever saw? How was it?
A: I’d have to say that my real first concert had to be The Vans Warped Tour 2000. I’ll never forget my first year at Warped. My dad went with me and as we were watching The Starting Line, I turned to him and told him that by my senior year of high school, I wanted to be on the Warped Tour. I’m still amazed that it worked out and really happened.

Q: What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
A: An acoustic guitar, my teddy bear and a flat iron.

Q: Who are your major musical influences?
A: The bands that played the greatest role in my life have probably been Blink 182, Sublime, Thrice and Taking Back Sunday.

Q: Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
A: Keep it real.
