The Hot Seat: Butch Walker

  by mtvU.

butch-2811Butch Walker discusses his most sexually deviant fan and gives us a near encyclopedic list of his musical influences among other things on this weeks Hot Seat…
1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience?
Wow. my WHOLE LIFE IS CRAZY MAN!!!!! Kidding. I don’t have much to say about this one. I did see a guy in the crowd jerking off while watching me play on the last tour. Does that count as crazy?
2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Well, I don’t know because I am really not interested in school. I graduated high school with an A average, but that was just to prove to my parents that I could play in a rock band 6 nights a week at bars and still graduate. Maybe I would want to be a History major, so I could teach high school kids what really happened, instead of the skewed version I was taught in my little hick town.
3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Chicago… no wait.. New York… no… Atlanta for sure. That is my hometown and I feel like the goddamn mayor there or something when I do shows. I don’t know why, but I just have the best fanbase ever and they are most rabid in the A Town. Did I just sound megalomaniacal for a second?
4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Always regret the things you haven’t done, not things you have done. Don’t yell out requests at rock shows and don’t ever get someone else’s likeness tattooed on your body if they are still alive.
5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
CD? They still sell those? well, my Diamond Rio mp3 player is filled with a huge list of assorted goodies.. hell it holds something like.. 8 whole records! Technology is awesome. Those records are:
Sleigh Bells, Bryan Adams greatest hits, Neon Indian, The Black Keys, Best Coast, Butch’s iphone voice notes, and The Wombats.
6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to?
Well i don’t get to watch much TV but I am 2 shows in on Mad Men and i gotta say… i feel like smoking.
7. What’s the first concert you ever saw – how was it?
KISS. I was 8 years old. How was it? F@#king awesome. The circus paled in comparison to it after that.
8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Fabreze, Motorcycle, and wine.
9. Who are your major musical influences?
They still happen daily, but when I was young it started with Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Rolling Stones, KISS, Queen, Billy Joel, Santana, Journey, Elton John, Tom Petty, ELO, The Kinks, Elvis Costello, Duran Duran, Cheap Trick, Prince, The Who, then a whole bunch of bad metal. Later in life, it would be Radiohead (early stuff), Weezer, Jeff Buckley, Beck, James Hall, Ryan Adams, Conor Oberst and anyone with a good story to tell. Are you sorry you asked?
Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Like what you like. Not what you think you have to have on your iPod.
