Von Pea, Don Will, and Ilyas, a.k.a. Tanya Morgan took some time off from promoting their new album, Brooklynati, and their tour to answer our burning questions in this week’s Hot Seat.
1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Von Pea: Hmm…well I can’t tell the story, but it begins with me walking into my hotel room and seeing 4 women on the bed, and ends with the police showing up like 2 hours later.
Don Will: Hands down I’d say it was this time in Savannah, GA with the strippers or maybe that time we were in Victoria Canada. Hmm… nah it was prolly that time in Denver, Colorado. Hell you know what? Anytime we are in your city its probably getting crazy that night. trust!
Ilyas: You don’t want to know..it may be too explicit (laughs)
2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Von Pea: Haha my major was stage tech at one point then I switched to computer information systems and got an associates degree in 2006. I guess I would simply take all of those computer classes over since technology changes so fast.
Don Will: It would definitely be advanced wood working techniques. That was my favorite class in design school either that or some kinda photography class.
Ilyas: Some type of course that discusses all the new faiths/religions being born right now. As we step into a New Age and a New World Order there are many new things that people are creating and the new philosophies being born are beautiful as well as interesting.
3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Von Pea: I love going to The Bay Area in California because its been like a second home to T.M. for about 4 years now. I go from the airport to Wing Stop!
Don Will: The Bay. Its like a second home and I love the vibe. plus I have a MILLION friends out there.
Ilyas: The Bay area because I’m a hippy at heart and I love the Haight Street area. Hell! You can “smoke” in the park and no, I’m not a Rasta (laughs)
4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Von Pea: Questlove from The Roots simply told us to weather the storm. Erick Sermon said to always do YOU, that way you’ll always be in style.
Don Will: Do something nice for yourself once in a while.
Ilyas: My mother told me to always live life like I only have a few months left.
5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Von Pea: Theres this MC named Che Grand…his album Everything’s Good Ugly I’m addicted to that right now.
Don Will: Redman and Method’s Black Out 2
Ilyas: Black Sabbath’s discography. (The Ozzie years)
6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
Von Pea: 30 Rock! I love that show. It got so bad I was walking around with episodes of it on my phone. haha…
Don Will: I watch TMZ… *hangs head*
Ilyas: I read Marilyn Manson’s autobiography and that was great! He’s a deep dude. And presently I’m reading a book about Aleister Crowley. What a character he was! (laughs)
7. What’s the first concert you ever saw – how was it?
Von Pea: I’m embarrassed to say the first show I’ve ever seen was N.E.R.D. back in 2001. I’d just never cared about seeing anyone live before then. It was a good show, they did most of the first album and everyone sang along. Since then I’ve seen or opened for almost every one of my favorite artists.
Don Will: – the first one i remember was The Jacksons victory tour. it was utterly amazing and life shaping. I don’t think we have concerts/tours of that caliber anymore. I know Kanye brought that vibe back with glow in the dark but I don’t think nothing is touching Mikes reign.
Ilyas: Something my parents took me to long ago. I cant remember much about the show. All I know is there were other kids there that shared my pleasure in creating chaos for the adults while we ran around crazy.
8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Von Pea: Well of course toiletries, you gotta stay so fresh and so clean. Then electronics, gotta have my phone, laptop, and mp3 player as entertainment. Then finally, an item from home for when you get homesick. it can be anything, but it helps.
Don Will: My laptop. period. and my phone lol
Ilyas: Cell phone, PSP, and a few good books.
9. Who are your major musical influences?
Von Pea: Big Daddy Kane, The Roots, De La Soul, Jay Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Outkast, and so on…
Don Will: I have been shaped by so many artists that a list will not do it any justice. I’ll just say I’m shaped as much by music I dislike as I am by music I like. That serves as a template of what NOT to do lol
Ilyas: Andre 3000, Jay-z, Ice Cube, and Maynard of A Perfect Circle (incredible lyricist!)
10.Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Von Pea: When you graduate, move to Brooklynati!
Don Will: At the end of the day we are all students of life, if you learn how to learn you will get the most of any situation!
Ilyas: Yeah WEAR CONDOMS!!
