Kenny Hohman, the guitarist/singer of Super 400, answers the burning questions in this week’s Hot Seat.
1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
Valentines night at a club called Valentines. Halfway through the set Lori went for it a little too hard on the bass and cut her finger open spraying blood all over the bass and her pants. I didn’t even notice it because my eyes are closed half of the time and she never stopped playing. By the end of the set there was blood everywhere. Fans dubbed it the Valentines Massacre. Once I hit a dude in the head with my guitar on a boat gig for messing with her. Just don’t even consider messing with a woman like that !
2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
I would study entymology because bugs fascinate me. That or I’d love to learn to make animated films that we could then make music for. I love the Masters of Russian Animation dvd series , especially “my green crocodile” and “the glass harmonica” . Beautiful marriage of animation and music.
3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
I like playing Boulder Colorado because we have lots of fun there. Cool old theaters converted to rock venues all around CO . We always bring our Raleigh choppers (little bad ass bicycles) with us on US tours and Boulder is very bike friendly with lots of great food options . Music lovers. Lots of friends there. Memphis is a new favorite after spending a bunch of time recording Sweet Fist at Ardent studio there . Like a whole new family for us there and so much soul music and soul food everywhere !
4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Give up music and find yourself an honest trade.
5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
I’ve been on a Big Star kick because of their recent release Keep an Eye on the Sky .
6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
I got on a Cormac McCarthy kick after seeing the movie No Country for Old Men which was adapted from his book by the same title . I read “The Orchard Keeper” and I loved it so much I just went on a binge and read every other book that he wrote. Absolutely incredible.
7. What’s the first concert you ever saw - how was it?
My sister took me to see Triumph when I was 10 and I just remember Rick Emmet playing like a 15 minute long mandolin solo in a custom white suit with a lone spotlight center stage and singing incredibly high. It was loud as hell.
8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Kombucha tea, Cracker Barrel and subsequently a decent toilet.
9. Who are your major musical influences?
Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Big Star, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Blind Faith, David Bowie, Grant Green, Van Halen, Cream, Donny Hathaway, Jack Daley, Chuck D’Aloia, a million other great things.
10. Any random messages or tips you’d like to give to mtvU watchers?
Be good to somebody. Be good to yourself. Be good.
