Joshua Wilkerson from Green River Ordinance talks Jimmy Johns, bowling and Tom Petty in this week’s Hot Seat interview.
1. Tell us about your craziest touring experience.
We played a show with the Counting Crows at a festival and Jimmy Johns had something to do with it. They told us that when we were done playing, we needed to get our stuff off stage really fast. We asked why and they told us that they were going to have a sub eating contest between our set and the Counting Crows. We played the show in front of 16,000 people and got our stuff off of the stage really fast so that we could watch them. The winner of the sub eating contest ate 24 foot-long sandwiches in 5 minutes! It blew my mind. You could literally see a huge potbelly on the guy that wasn’t there before!
2. What type of college class would you’d most want to take and why?
Bowling class - I think it’d be really fun to be an amazing closet bowler. No one is good at bowling so when someone throws out the idea that you should all go bowling you say yes casually. Then when you get there: BOOM, you bowl a 240 and embarrass them all!
3. What city in America is the most fun to visit and why?
Charleston, SC is the coolest place! It’s a slow-paced southern town where the people are really nice. It’s also on the water and their downtown is sweet to walk around with tons of historic buildings from the 1800’s.
4. What’s some of the best advice you were ever given?
Ryan Adams said, “When you feel like you having nothing to write about, write about that.”
5. What’s in heavy rotation in your MP3/CD player right now?
Safetysuit, Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors, and I’ve been reverting back to some old Jimmy Eat World lately
6. The last good book you read or TV show you’re addicted to.
I’m kind of embarrassed to say this, but we’ve all been watching “Glee” lately…other than that, I love me some “Dexter,” “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” and “Tosh.0″
7. What’s the first concert you ever saw - how was it?
My first concert was The Wallflowers opening up for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers when I was in middle school. It was one of the best concerts I’ve ever seen. Both of those bands are amazing and right up my alley.
8. What are three items you can’t live without on tour?
Internet, Red Bull, and food variety. We get tired of eating double cheeseburgers, tacos, pizza, and sub sandwiches from the fast food chains, so we like to change it up as much as we can.
9. Who are your major musical influences?
Tom Petty, U2, & Third Eye Blind are some of the major ones. If someone asks what our music sounds like, I usually say old Matchbox 20 and Third Eye Blind but if they don’t know those bands I’ll say “it sounds like if Tom Petty and U2 had a baby that grew up in the 90’s.”
