mtvU’s 2011 “Woman of the Year” Aung San Suu Kyi has been a tireless advocate for peace in Myanmar for decades and her work has contributed to some major changes.

After 50 years of rebellion against the Muslim north and millions of lives lost, the Republic of South Sudan will soon become the world’s newest nation. Last January, the overwhelming majority of its people voted to break free from the north and establish an independent nation, hopefully ending decades of brutal violence.

Stephanie Figgins is a 21-year-old senior at George Washington University. After learning about the atrocities happening in Darfur, she started a STAND chapter at her high school with a few friends, and went on to serve for two years as its Washington, D.C., college outreach coordinator.
