As I watched the inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States on a small television in a hotel in northern Uganda, I was filled with a mix of emotions- pride, excitement, joy, and a touch of sadness that I couldn’t be in Washington to witness it firsthand.

When in Kampala, the capital of Uganda, (located in the south central part of the country) it’s easy to forget that what the UN called “one of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis” is taking place in the same country. People who live in the south are not affected by the war at all, whereas those who live in the north have their lives consumed by it.

Our two big Christmas concerts (Carols and School-Wide) totally rocked and went off without a hitch. However, no show is complete without a little wardrobe malfunction; and at the Carols Concert that supreme honor was mine.

Back in November, I met a young rapper and student named Rouki who was in the middle of recording a video for his new song “Boa Vista.” The song recounts the amazing time he had while interning at a center for disabled children this summer.

Fulbright and mtvU sent five students around the world to study and promote “the power of music.”
